Location: In-Person – UC Law campus in San Francisco or Berkeley City College campus in Berkeley
Dates: Spring Semester; Exact Saturday dates vary based on which grade the Instructor is placed (see specific dates below)
POSITION OVERVIEW
Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college-prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school Scholars. Using our original curriculum and a student-centered, anti-oppressive approach to teaching and learning, instructors play an integral part in supporting our Scholars’ journey to a competitive college and beyond.
DATES, SCHEDULE, & WEEKLY HOURS
- Instructor Orientation:
- 10th Grade Instructor Orientation: 1/18; 9:00am-2:30pm
- 9th Grade Instructor Orientation: 2/8; 9:00-2:30pm
- Spring Saturday Academy: Typically 3 Saturdays a month, exact dates vary. Due to our staffing needs and only seeing Scholars once a week, we cannot support more than 2 absences a semester. Saturday Academy Programming is held on campus from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (PT) on the following Saturdays:
- 10th Grade: Feb 1, 8: Mar 1, 8, 15, 22; Apr 12, 19, 26; May 10
- 9th Grade: Mar 1, 8, 15, 22; Apr 12, 19, 26; May 3, 10
- Schedule: 9am-4pm, with a 50 minute lunch break from 11:30-12:20
- Teach four 50-minute lessons to groups of 25-30 Scholars. Your schedule will also include an instructional prep period.
- Weekly Hours:
- Instructors are allotted 10 maximum hours per week during their seasonal employment, made up of Standard and Flex Hours.
- Standard Hours: working on site with staff or students instructing a class or engaging with an instructional prep or support period:
- Saturdays, 9:00am-4:00pm (with a 50 minute lunch) = ~6 Hours/weekly
- Flex Hours are time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week = up to 4 Flex Hours/weekly.

Saturday Academy Programming will take place at either:
- UC Law campus: 200 McAllister St, San Francisco, CA 94102; off the Civic Center BART stop
- Berkeley City College: 2050 Center St, Berkeley, CA 94704; off the Downtown Berkeley BART stop

- 9th Math: Numbers and Operations, Graphs and Relationships, and Algebra/Pattern and Structure Courses
- Skills include: properties of numbers; expressions, equations, and identities; ratio and rate; percentages; proportional reasoning; irrational numbers; linear, quadratic, and exponential functions (including compound growth formula); algebraic representation of functions; graphing functions and identifying key characteristics; modeling real-world situations with functions; systems of equations and inequalities; algebra with exponents; fractional exponents and roots; algebra with rational expressions and equations; properties 2D and 3D geometric figures; introduction to coordinate geometry.

- Skills include: triangle geometry and special triangles; trigonometric functions; inverse trig functions; radian measure; the unit circle; graphing and modeling with sine and cosine functions; unit analysis; function notation, including function composition and inverse functions; characteristics of graphs; transformations of graphs; average rate of change; introduction to limits; introduction to the derivative and the power rule; and content covered on the new digital SAT.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instruction & Facilitation – Teach four periods of ELA coursework. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement.
- Navigate Instructional Technologies – Facilitate the use of technological resources for instruction.
- Content Preparation – Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement adjustments to pacing and activities based on student needs. Reflect on coaching feedback and brainstorm teaching strategies with peers.
- Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote student connections, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
- Grading and Record-Keeping – Calculate grades according to rubrics. Provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback to students. Complete all grading within 1 week and keep the gradebook up to date.
- Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors – Plan and work alongside fellow instructors. Attend all scheduled meetings, professional developments, check-ins, and debriefs. Respond to all messages in a timely manner.
- Responsiveness to Coaching and Feedback – Meet with instructional coaches at least twice during the semester to receive and implement feedback from their classroom observations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in content related field
- High school classroom teaching experience
- Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
- Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
- Expertise and depth of knowledge in Advanced high school-level Mathematics (Algebra & Trigonometry)
- Willingness to engage in conversations analyzing power, privilege, and oppression
Preferred:
- Secondary Education Degree and Certification
- Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
- Knowledgeable with research-based, culturally responsive, equity-driven, and anti-oppressive instructional practices

COMPENSATION
This position is benefits ineligible in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
The compensation listed in this posting reflects what SEO believes it will pay for this position at the time of this posting. Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and SEO reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
