Job Description
We’re looking for a deeply technical, hands-on Technical Content Writer to help tell Tailscale’s story. Not through abstract messaging, but through code, architecture diagrams, and real-world workflows.
This role is ideal for someone who loves writing for engineers — the kind of person who reads the changelog, spins up local environments, and prefers examples over adjectives. You’ll work closely with our product and engineering teams to uncover technical narratives, break down complex infrastructure use cases, and publish clear, concise, and helpful content for a highly technical audience.
Whether you’re writing about ephemeral node access for CI/CD, just-in-time SSH, or setting up Funnel for webhook testing, you’ll help developers and ops teams understand how Tailscale can fit into — and improve — their workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Create exceptional technical content
- Write blog posts, product tutorials, and technical guides for developers, platform teams, and infrastructure engineers.
- Translate deep technical topics like WireGuard tunnels, subnet routing, or SSH access flows into clear, accurate, and engaging writing.
- Draft diagrams, example configurations, and CLI workflows that pair with your writing.
Work closely with engineering
- Partner with PMs, engineers, and support to understand the real-world problems our users face — and how they’re solving them with Tailscale.
- Stay close to the product and experiment hands-on. You’ll often be testing the features you’re writing about.
Support product storytelling
- Contribute to launch content and product announcements.
- Help define and evolve Tailscale’s technical voice: developer-first, straightforward, and grounded in real use cases.
Own and grow our technical content library
- Maintain a high-quality, technically accurate backlog of evergreen content.
- Collaborate with marketing to distribute content across appropriate channels.
What We Are Looking For
Technical communication skills
- 3–5 years writing for a technical audience, ideally in infrastructure, dev tools, security, or SaaS.
- Experience writing content that demonstrates hands-on usage (not just describing features).
- Comfortable explaining things like peer-to-peer connectivity, ACLs, exit nodes, and ephemeral access.
Hands-on technical understanding
- Familiarity with Linux networking, SSH workflows, infrastructure-as-code, or modern cloud-native environments.
- Ability to explore and test the product independently (e.g. installing Tailscale, configuring ACLs, working with the CLI).
- Bonus if you’ve built side projects or demos using tools like Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, etc.
Writing and editorial craft
- Clear, concise writing style with a high bar for technical accuracy.
- Comfortable editing your own work and iterating quickly based on feedback.
- Experience collaborating with subject matter experts and translating their knowledge for a broader audience.
Nice if You Have
- You’ve used Tailscale before (even casually) and are familiar with our value prop.
- Experience contributing to docs, blogs, or open source projects in a previous role.
- Background in DevRel, developer tools, or early-stage SaaS.
- Ability to sketch architecture diagrams, sample code snippets, or GitHub-based demos.
- An understanding of search and LMM optimization.
