Legal Counsel (Regulatory and Compliance)

This role reports to: Senior Legal Counsel (Regulatory & Compliance)

Purpose of the role:

To provide regulatory and legal compliance support and assistance to senior legal professionals and the organisation as a whole by conducting legal research, support regulatory responses, drafting compliance documents, assisting with various legal tasks, helping ensure compliance with laws and regulations and supporting Takealot’s legal needs.

Your specific responsibilities will include:

• Research a wide range of laws including those related to product compliance across different product categories, consumer protection law, competition law & general trade.
• Support the organisation to implement and ensure appropriate monitoring and oversight, is in place to constantly improve and test the effectiveness of the overall regulatory and compliance program in the organisation.
• Update and improve template documents.
• Provide clear regulatory & compliance advice and guidance to the organisation by understanding the regulatory & compliance environment that the organisation operates in.
• Assist with dispute resolution and regulatory litigation.
• Monitor and advise on new legal developments affecting the organisation.
• Conduct legal research, draft legal opinions, and provide legal advice to the organisation as required.
• Support legal compliance across the business in adherence to South African business operational requirements as well as applicable international business requirements by supporting the implementation of policies and procedures related to legal compliance and key risk areas.
• Support policy documents drafting and review including commercial contract review and input insofar as it relates to regulatory compliance and legal compliance.
• Develop and implement a regulatory and compliance training and communications program that raises awareness and educates staff in the organisation.
• Support the collation of information and data for relevant management and shareholder reporting.
• Support the legal team as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

• LLB, admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa
• 1-3 years post-admission experience at the bar, a well-established law firm, or in the in-house legal department of a large corporate
• Experience in regulatory and/or compliance law is essential
• Experience in regulatory and e-commerce, retail and/or litigation law would be ideal [Preferred]
