The Banner is seeking an ambitious, community-driven Creator and Social Editor to lead our social media storytelling efforts through compelling, high-impact video journalism and social media management. Based in Montgomery County, Maryland, this position is ideal for a self-starter who thrives on connecting with communities and bringing local stories to life with authenticity and flair.
We’re looking for a creative storyteller who wants to be on the ground floor as we build a new newsroom and lead the charge on developing our audience engagement strategy. This is a creative role with a chance to produce social-first journalism, build community, create strategy, and be a leading figure for The Banner in Montgomery County.
What You’ll Do:
- Pitch, report, film and edit short-form video stories for social platforms, focusing on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
- Cover a wide range of events and subjects, including local news, community events, profiles and feature stories.
- Produce videos with a focus on authenticity, storytelling and audience engagement.
- Develop and implement a platform-specific content strategy across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and others.
- Write and publish posts, schedule content and monitor performance.
- Respond to community feedback and help foster a vibrant, engaged audience.
- Produce newsletter alerts and push notifications.
- Identify emerging trends and cultural moments in Montgomery County to shape relevant content.
- Collaborate with editors and reporters to amplify the newsroom’s journalism through social-first storytelling.
- Help establish best practices for visual reporting and platform-native storytelling.
What You'll Bring:
- Familiarity with Montgomery County communities, issues and culture.
- Experience growing a social media audience from the ground up.
- Proven experience in video production and editing, preferably in a journalism or storytelling context.
- Deep understanding of social media platforms, trends and content formats.
- Strong reporting instincts, with the ability to spot compelling, people-centered stories.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a collaborative newsroom.
- Journalistic sensibility, including a commitment to the values of accuracy, fairness and independence.
- Proficiency with mobile and desktop video editing tools (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut, Final Cut or similar).
- Ability to manage deadlines and juggle multiple projects at once.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills a plus.

- Location: This role is based in Montgomery County, MD. Reliable transportation is required.
Salary Range: $80,000 - $90,000 Individual pay may vary from the target range and is determined by several factors including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations. We periodically review all teammates pay to ensure a great compensation package that is fair and equal across the board.
