The Bump is seeking a transformative, culture-forward Director of Engineering to lead our transition from a web-first content site to an AI-driven e-commerce and content platform. In this pivotal role, you’ll bridge the gap between "0 to 1" innovation and the evolution of our core platform, serving as the technical architect of our 3-year growth strategy. You won’t just manage a team; you’ll define the engineering vision for a modernized, app-centric ecosystem that supports parents globally, leveraging the full scale of The Knot Worldwide.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Define the long-term technical roadmap for The Bump’s core products and services, including its new Registry offering, apps, CMS and tools.
- Partner with Product, Design, Data, and Marketing to align technical delivery with key business priorities like Registry adoption, user engagement, SEO/AIO, TOF tools.
- Capitalize on TKWW’s “Build Once, Serve Many” philosophy to modernize our tech stack and increase velocity.
- Drive architectural alignment with other zones to ensure performance, scalability, and governance across shared systems and APIs.
- Manage and grow a team of Engineering Managers and ICs across several squads.
- Foster a strong team culture of collaboration, excellence, and delivery ownership.
- Mentor senior engineers and managers, ensuring clarity of roles, growth opportunities, and performance expectations.
- Work closely with zone leads across the company to identify areas of shared investment and cross-zone impact.
- Ensure on-time, high-quality delivery of quarterly OKRs tied to The Bump’s goals
- Remove execution blockers and ensure sustainable velocity across squads.
- Monitor engineering KPIs and drive continuous improvement through retrospectives and actionable insights.
- Ensure The Bump squads adopt and contribute to shared tooling, design systems (ODS), and infrastructure.
- Identify opportunities to increase leverage from Platform and Data teams, reducing bespoke code and duplicated functionality across brands.
SUCCESSFUL DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING CANDIDATES HAVE:
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 7+ years in progressive leadership roles managing multiple Zones or equivalent scopes.
- Proven ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams and large-scale engineering initiatives at an organizational level.
- Deep technical expertise in scalable architectures, cloud infrastructure, and emerging technologies, with a focus on cost-effective solutions.
- Working knowledge of Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, Amazon Web Services, Kubernetes, Akamai CDN, New Relic or similar, Contentful, experience with AdTech (GAM, APS) a plus. Experience with native app development lifecycle and app stores and with Segment or similar event aggregation tooling pipelines
- Strong strategic thinking skills, capable of aligning technical roadmaps with business goals and fostering innovation within teams.
- Exceptional leadership and coaching abilities, with a demonstrated track record of developing engineering managers and technical leaders.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to present complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience managing budgets, headcount planning, and resource allocation across diverse and geographically distributed teams.
- Strong focus on organizational health and team culture, with an ability to proactively identify and address challenges in team dynamics and morale.

WORK MODEL:
- This role is Together@TKWW-eligible and based near one of our office hubs. You’ll be expected to work in the office two days a week as part of our hybrid work model.
- This role includes on-call rotations to ensure the stability of our systems. Specific schedules and compensation will be discussed during the interview process.
