Job brief:
As the Lead of TWC’s Military Weather-Science Portfolio, you will serve as the primary architect for weather-based decision support systems used in global defense operations. This role is not just about forecasting; it is about tactical exploitation. You will translate complex environmental data into mission-risk assessments that provide military commanders with a distinct "weather advantage."
You will operate at the intersection of high-level meteorology, AI-driven data science, and real-world military applications, ensuring our technology portfolio remains cutting-edge and pragmatically deployable.
The impact you'll make:
You will lead and manage The Weather Company’s (TWC’s) weather-science portfolio related to military applications. This will include:
- Understanding the needs of military customers for weather data and weather-related decision support. This role will operate at the intersection of military operations and Weather/environmental data for mission risk assessment and tactical exploitation opportunities. Gaining and sustaining this understanding may sometimes involve travel.
- A key contributor to the envisioning, implementing, supporting, and refining of major core elements of the company’s military/meteorological technology portfolio in a manner consistent with the company’s needs.
- Staying up to date on the latest advancements in meteorological instruments, software, and methodologies from across the enterprise.
- Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of various observational and forecast data sources in order to provide optimal recommendations on constructing solutions.
- Collaborating with other scientists as needed for solutions that extend to needs that encompass both military and non-military applications.
- Developing and testing forecast and decision support methods from in-house and external data to meet the requirements of The Weather Company (TWC) products customized for military needs.
- Collaborating effectively with other developers and systems engineers so that state-of-the-science algorithms are effectively implemented into TWC products.
- Describing the science content of TWC products in conferences, symposia, trade shows, and more.
- Preparing and delivering scientific, technical, or strategy presentations to TWC and external audiences, including clients and partners.
- Actively facilitating others’ professional development via mentoring or serving in leadership of internal cross-team groups or external professional organizations.
- Contributing to strategic planning for the long-term success of the company.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
What you've accomplished:
- Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related field.
- 8+ progression of responsibility in an applied meteorological or technical position, ideally with at least four of those years in the military.
- Deep knowledge and experience in several relevant sciences and technologies, including meteorology, computing, data science, AI, and/or systems architecture.
- Proven track record in conceiving pragmatic, cutting-edge weather-related technologies that materially advance the science.
- Ability to anticipate science and technology trends, and proactively help ensure the company leverages emerging relevant capabilities quickly and appropriately.
- Be widely recognized as a go-to leader in weather science and/or related technologies both inside and outside of the company.
- Visceral passion for envisioning, elaborating, developing, optimizing, and reducing to practice pragmatic, world-class, state-of-the-science weather technologies both as an individual contributor and leader.
- Demonstrated experience with statistical and computational methods in meteorology.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be a strong contributor to a product team
- Proficiency in programming languages (e.g., Python, R) and software used in meteorological research. Ideally, skills with deep learning and use of AI programming tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
Base Salary: $150,000 – $175,000
The base salary offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region of work premises, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, among other factors.
