Animal Research Technologist
This full-time position requires one weekend day per week plus four weekdays or two weekend days per week plus three weekdays. Hours fall between 5:30am and 5:30pm per the facility light schedule; this position requires early morning scientific deliverables on weekdays. Holidays are staffed on a rotating schedule.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform specialized duties
- Sample collection for genotyping, pathogen testing, titer bleeds
- Perform tissue harvests using aseptic technique
- Administer immunizations via SQ, IP, ID, IM, IV
- Induction/monitoring of animals under general anesthesia
- Review project documents and coordinate activities with Project Management
- Assist in research efforts to optimize project outcomes and continuously improve animal welfare
- Perform daily mouse husbandry, including cage changes, adding enrichment, and replacing food and water
- Maintain accurate, detailed daily records, which include medical and project documents
- Perform euthanasia techniques per AVMA guidelines (primary method: CO2)
- Assist in daily health and welfare observations, report findings, and perform treatments under the direction of the Veterinary Nurse
- Assist in disinfection/sanitation of equipment and facility
- Assist in receipt of animals from outside vendors
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace
- Function within a high performing team with a strong focus on collaboration and communication
- Participate in departmental and company meetings and presentations
- Interface with laboratory, operations, and management staff
- Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and help improve current processes
- Follow Institutional, local, state, and federal regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure proper animal care, health, and welfare
- Other duties as assigned, which may include cross-training to support other roles
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficiency in verbal and written English required
- 5+ years of lab animal or veterinary experience preferred, level dependent on experience
- Experience in an AAALAC accredited facility preferred
- AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician level (LAT) preferred; must sit for exam within 12 months of employment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Lift 40lbs
- Walk and stand for several hours per day
- Perform repetitive motions (bend, squat, kneel, twist, reach above shoulder height, bottle capping, push/pull)
- Perform quick, simple grasping motion with both hands for several hours per day
- Wear full Personal Protective Equipment for several hours per day (mask, coveralls, gloves, shoe covers, hairnet)
- Ability to work around and with inhaled anesthetic gasses
