THE OPPORTUNITY

Unknown Worlds is seeking an experienced VFX Artist to help create the immersive underwater world of Subnautica 2. Our VFX team creates real-time visual effects that bridge gameplay and art, while elevating the emotional and artistic tone across the game.

In this role, you will work on VFX features spanning from environments, creatures, tools, vehicles, cutscenes, and UI. Partnering closely across disciplines to ensure visuals are expressive, performant, and clearly communicate gameplay to the player.

Our ideal candidate will be self motivated, with a passion for game creation, real time visual effects, art and animation.
This is a full time remote position on a globally distributed team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create, implement, and iterate on a range of real-time visual effects that meet the aesthetic, gameplay, and technical goals of the project
  • Take ownership of VFX for key features or gameplay systems, ensuring clarity, responsiveness, and emotional impact
  • Collaborate with Design, Engineering and Art disciplines to reinforce player experience
  • Profile and optimize effects within performance budgets across target platforms making improvements where needed
  • Contribute to improving workflows, pipelines, and documentation for the VFX team
  • Provide constructive feedback, and share knowledge with other VFX artists to maintain a high craft bar
  • Iterate effectively based on playtests, cross-discipline and player feedback

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years experience as a VFX artist in the games industry, with at least one shipped title
  • Experience developing in Unreal Engine 5 using Niagara and Blueprints 
  • Strong diverse portfolio demonstrating real-time VFX ranging from environments, characters, screen FX, gameplay driven effects and more
  • Proficiency in shader/material authoring and real-time particle systems
  • Solid understanding of real-time rendering principles, technical art and performance optimization
  • Skilled in relevant 2D and 3D content creation tools such as Blender, Photoshop, Substance Designer, After Effects and Houdini
  • Ability to adapt to and help evolve a project’s visual style
  • Strong understanding of art fundamentals, animation timings, color theory, along with a high level of aesthetic judgment
  • Self-starting, organized, collaborative, highly motivated and comfortable working in a remote environment
  • Strong written, visual and verbal communication skills

PREFERENCES:

  • Experience working on live development or Early Access titles
  • Experience building reusable or systemic VFX frameworks
  • Experience creating water-based or underwater effects
  • Passion for or experience in survival-crafting and open-world games
