About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior DataOps Developer to operate and evolve the production database infrastructure that powers Upgrade’s core financial systems.

This role focuses on operational excellence, reliability, and performance in a high-throughput production environment. You’ll work with large-scale PostgreSQL systems running on AWS, ensuring that critical financial data remains accurate, available, and performant.

This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys running production systems at scale, solving complex database performance challenges, and designing safe operational processes for mission-critical data.

What You’ll Do

  • Operate and maintain high-availability PostgreSQL databases on AWS RDS supporting core financial systems
  • Execute complex SQL operations safely in production environments with a zero-downtime mindset
  • Monitor database health and performance using CloudWatch, Grafana, and observability tooling
  • Analyze query performance and implement optimizations including indexing, partitioning, and schema improvements
  • Support and troubleshoot data replication and synchronization pipelines using tools such as AWS DMS and Fivetran
  • Manage and triage operational database requests during East Coast business hours
  • Participate in a shared on-call rotation to support mission-critical production systems
  • Collaborate with data engineering and platform teams to ensure reliable data pipelines and downstream analytics systems
  • Contribute to operational standards and procedures that improve performance, scalability, security, and data integrity

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience operating production OLTP PostgresQL databases
  • Strong experience administering PostgreSQL on AWS RDS
  • Deep knowledge of: SQL query execution and optimization, indexing strategies, table partitioning, schema design and evolution
  • Experience with PostgreSQL replication and backup strategies
  • Hands-on experience performing database upgrades, patching, and recovery
  • Strong troubleshooting and incident response skills in high-traffic production environments
  • Excellent documentation and communication skills
  • Ability to think systematically and carefully when working with production data
  • Work from Canada East Coast (EST/EDT) to support business operations

Nice to Have

  • Experience with geo-redundant database architectures (active/active, active/standby)
  • Experience with PostgreSQL replication tools (pg_logical, AWS DMS, Fivetran)
  • Experience with database management systems (Redshift, Databricks, Snowflake)
  • Experience working with large-scale data replication pipelines
  • Strong Linux fundamentals related to database performance and security
  • Experience using modern developer productivity or AI-assisted tooling (Resolve AI, Claude, Gemini, etc.)

The compensation range of this position in Canada is $150,000 - $250,000 CAD annually plus equity and benefits. Within this range, an individual's base pay will be dependent on a variety of factors, including without limitation, job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.
