Versaterm is launching a new standalone Digital Evidence Management System, and we’re assembling a team to build its foundation from the ground up. We’re designing the product direction, architecture, and technology stack while developing shared services that will support secure, compliant, and auditable digital evidence management across agencies and jurisdictions.

This is a unique chance to join a new team early, contribute to key architectural and product decisions, and help establish engineering patterns that will scale across Versaterm’s broader product suite.

The Role

As a Software Engineer II, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining software applications, working on both backend and frontend systems, and contributing to the overall growth and innovation of our public safety product offerings. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions while continuously improving your technical expertise. 

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement, test, and maintain high‑quality software solutions that align with business needs, with a focus on clean, maintainable, and well‑documented code.
  • Practice and contribute to Spec‑Driven Development, collaborating with product and design partners to define clear, testable specifications (e.g., APIs, contracts, acceptance criteria) before implementation, and using those specs to guide development, testing, and long‑term maintainability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, productions issues, and technical problems.
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of software applications, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance.
  • Apply company standards, technologies, and best practices to continuously improve development workflows and product quality.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior engineers, reviewing code and offering constructive feedback to foster team growth.
  • Participate in the team’s development process, including sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives. Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.

What You'll Bring

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience and training.
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in software development, ideally in a modern web or cloud environment.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, TypeScript), with the ability to work across a full‑stack codebase.
  • Experience building modern web applications across the stack, including front‑end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) and back‑end services using frameworks such as Flask or Node.js.
  • Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, Redis, or similar, including writing queries and working with ORMs.
  • Proficiency with Git and common branching, pull request, and code review workflows.
  • Familiarity with unit and integration testing frameworks (i.e. Jest, Playwright, PyTest) and a solid understanding of testable design.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills with a focus on problem-solving and solution delivery.
  • Familiarity with agile development practices, including Scrum or Kanban.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.

Impress Us With

  • Experience with Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, Radix UI, shadcn/ui, TanStack Query, Zustand on the front end, and Flask, SQLAlchemy, Celery, Redis, PostgreSQL, Alembic on the back end.
  • Familiarity with AWS services relevant (e.g., S3, RDS, Secrets Manager, Lambda, CloudWatch), plus infrastructure‑as‑code tools like Terraform or cloud simulation tools like LocalStack.
  • Hands‑on experience using OpenAPI and type generation tools to keep back‑end APIs and front‑end types aligned.
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools in daily development to accelerate coding, tests, or documentation and interest in helping evolve AI‑ready patterns and workflows.
  • Experience improving GitHub Actions (or similar) workflows for build/test/scan/deploy, optimizing Docker image builds, or introducing quality gates (linting, formatting, SAST/SCA, container scanning

This position requires security clearances due to the nature of our work with public safety agencies. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada and must successfully obtain and maintain a Reliability security clearance from the Government of Canada. Additionally, candidates must comply with the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and pass a comprehensive, fingerprint-based background check. The starting salary for this position will be dependent upon many factors, such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience, education, training as well as internal equity, market data, and business needs. In addition to base salary and our comprehensive benefits offering, some roles may also be eligible for variable compensation such as incentive plans or discretionary performance bonuses.
