Viam works with any hardware and has modern architecture, easy developer APIs, cloud connectivity and tools, and enterprise-grade security to give even the leanest teams the power to launch and manage their smart machine businesses.

Viam makes building, deploying, and monitoring smart machines a more flexible, affordable, and user-friendly experience, allowing developers to do more with smart machines while getting them to market faster. By making smart machines more accessible, Viam is attracting talent and investment to the industry so that more people start building automated products and services that improve our quality of life.

Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) Fleet Management

Viam's products are built by engineers, for engineers. We want to build a platform we would want to use ourselves.

As a senior full-stack engineer in our web app organization, you will be responsible for building cloud-based functionality to enable remote configuration, control, management, and operation of a fleet of robots. Configuring one robot manually in a lab is one thing, but managing a fleet of 1000s of robots in the wild is what this product is for. The team is also responsible for building the foundation of the cloud management web site that will allow us to add richer features in the future.

In this role, you will be responsible for writing and reviewing code, working closely with and mentoring other engineers, providing feedback on and proposing technical designs, and supporting the team in identifying and triaging priority tasks. Some of our immediate focus areas include:

  • Creating and managing a variety of tools to enable users to easily configure and deploy fleets of machines.
  • Displaying smart machine configuration, connectivity, and availability status on the Viam website.
  • Maintaining the web application (Golang, Svelte with TypeScript, and Mongo DB) for managing individual machines to entire organizations.
  • Creating publicly available APIs used by our various SDKs to allow users to manage their fleet programmatically.
  • Dashboarding tools to give users better insight into their fleet.

All current team members are based in New York, NY, and are in office frequently. We are looking for team members who come into the office 3+ days per week. We are not looking for fully remote employees at this time.

You’ll be:

  • Working on a small team that iterates quickly for an enormous impact on our web application
  • Shaping our broader application architecture and technical roadmap
  • Expected to truly work across the stack. Our backend stack is Golang with MongoDB running on Linux, and our frontend is mostly in Svelte with TypeScript.
  • Learning about communication with a heterogeneous set of clients – at Viam, we don’t just have browsers connecting to a service, we also work with smart machine clients such as robots, mobile devices, and language-specific SDKs. gRPC, webRTC, and HTTP are all part of our protocol stack
  • Given opportunities to dive deeper into robotics, Internet of Things, and other areas where software meets hardware

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience with both backend and frontend (no need to be a perfect 50-50 split, but you will be doing more backend in this role)
  • Is energized through collaboration and looks forward to being part of a team
  • Is comfortable adjusting to evolving product goals and being flexible with their planning
  • Has experience with distributed systems and/or the design and architecture of a modern, scalable web application
  • Enjoys mentoring and teaching more junior engineers and seeks out cross-organizational impact
  • Prefers in-person collaboration and in-office work day-to-day but is comfortable with working with remote collaborators

Benefits:

  • 100% covered medical/dental/vision insurance plans, commuter benefits
  • Competitive salary & equity packages (see below)
  • Reproductive Health Benefits, including Fertility Benefits and Abortion Access Travel Benefits
  • 25 days paid vacation and generous holiday observances
  • One Medical Membership
  • Citi Bike memberships
  • Monthly wellness stipend to be used for a variety of fitness-related items like gym memberships, fitness classes, fitness equipment, apparel, and more
  • Free lunch every day that you’re in the office
  • Paid parental leave

The starting salary for this role is between $160K-220K/year. Your offer will vary based on several factors, including experience level, skillset, market location, and balancing internal equity relative to peers at the company. We recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced or more senior than this job description as posted. In these situations, the updated salary range will be communicated to you as a candidate. In addition to cash compensation, Viam offers a comprehensive Total Rewards package that includes equity grants, health benefits, and more.

Classification of protected categories is as follows:

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
