Staff Systems Design Engineer (Remote)

United States

Staff Systems Design Engineer (Remote)

Overview:

As a Staff Systems Design Engineer, you will lead the evolution of Weedmaps' design system as a scalable, production-grade product. This role unifies design and code at the intersection of Design, Engineering, and AI tooling to build, operationalize, and scale the system across all UI surfaces. The system must accelerate development, maintain high standards for craft and usability, align with engineering architecture, and enable consistent, app-wide changes. Success requires deep collaboration with Engineering (CI/CD, tokens, tooling), Creative (brand cohesion, evolution), and Product Design (development, iteration) to ensure system adoption and power the product experience.

The impact you'll make:

  • Define and evolve the multi-platform system (web + mobile) with clear architecture, governance, and scalability principles.
  • Own the roadmap and prioritization based on product needs, adoption gaps, and system performance.
  • Partner with Design and Creative leadership to ensure high craft, modern interaction patterns, and resilience to ongoing brand evolution.
  • Design and implement core system components, defining intuitive, flexible, and scalable APIs, variants, and composition patterns.
  • Ensure high standards for visual precision, fidelity, accessibility (React Aria), and interaction quality, motion, and state management.
  • Continuously refine components based on product usage and edge cases.
  • Implement automated quality systems, including visual regression testing, and continuously audit the system for usability and craft excellence. Act as a cross-functional steward of system quality.
  • Lead migration of legacy UI and ensure critical product surfaces (e.g., CTAs, checkout flows) are powered by the system, actively increasing adoption across the ecosystem.
  • Improve Developer Experience (DX) by creating intuitive, well-structured component APIs that balance flexibility and simplicity.
  • Establish a best-in-class tool-to-code pipeline (Figma, Claude, Builder, etc.) to map design artifacts to production components and prevent drift.
  • Partner with Engineering on architectural decisions (CI/CD, token systems, distribution infrastructure) and support enforcement mechanisms (linting, token constraints) to maintain system integrity.
  • Introduce and standardize AI-assisted workflows, structuring components for AI-friendly generation and integrating tools (Builder.io, Gemini, etc.) to improve consistency.
  • Mentor designers and engineers and create documentation that allows teams to move quickly within a well-governed system.
  • Identify strategic innovation opportunities, prototype new interaction models/motion systems, and codify successful innovations into the design system.

What you've accomplished:

  • 7+ years in front-end, design, or creative engineering, with strong mobile focus (iOS/Android).
  • Proven track record building and scaling design systems and component libraries across multiple teams/products.
  • Expertise in React (Web) and React Native, and modern front-end architecture.
  • Demonstrated ability to design intuitive component APIs and developer-friendly systems.
  • Deep understanding of design craft (typography, motion, interaction, visual systems).
  • Experience driving adoption of shared systems and implementing design-to-code pipelines (tokens, Figma integration).
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and workflows.
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to align Design, Engineering, and Creative stakeholders.

Bonus points:

  • Experience working on marketplace, e-commerce, or consumer platforms.
  • Familiarity with Storybook, visual regression tools, and token management systems.
  • Experience translating brand systems into scalable product UI.
  • Exposure to AI-native development environments and workflows.
  • Passion for building systems that balance craft, scalability, and speed.

The base pay range for this position is $200,000 - $220,317 per year

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
