Responsibilities
- Maintain ammonia refrigeration and freon-based cooling systems including operation, maintenance, and repairs
- Maintain and operate single, two-stage, cascade ammonia systems and subsystems
- Monitor and identify abnormal operating pressures, temperatures, and conditions within the refrigeration system; adjust, repair, and/or schedule service as required
- Operate refrigeration system components including vacuum pumps, chillers, evaporators, condensers, compressors, controls, and valves
- Perform and delegate daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspections and preventative maintenance on refrigeration equipment and cooler machinery on and off-site
- Perform maintenance duties such as plumbing, replacing valves, installing fixtures, detecting and repairing leaks
- Handle hazardous materials following OSHA and EPA guidance
- Monitor and record all system readings to document equipment operation and provide reports and troubleshooting
- Respond to emergency breakdowns of refrigeration systems
- Procure quotations and bids for work scopes, repairs, parts, and construction projects
- Ensure continuous training and competency on refrigeration updates and standards
- Train personnel for routine checks and system operations following SOP
- Act upon EAP and technical guidance during emergency and system malfunction situations
- Handle unscheduled and emergency equipment shutdowns
- Ensure all refrigeration equipment functions in a safe and optimal manner
- Support continuous operation of facility utility systems and preventative maintenance programs
- Assist in record-keeping and training requirements for ammonia refrigeration system compliance with state and federal guidelines
- Perform duties as assigned by the facility Manager
Qualifications
- Blue Seal (Toxic) Operating license issued by the state of New Jersey
- Minimum 3 years of ammonia and freon-based refrigeration experience
- Experience with screw and reciprocating compressors, recirculation pumps, HVAC units, boilers, air compressors, and associated control systems
- Work experience in ammonia system pump-downs and repairs
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to understand refrigeration blueprints, P&ID, and cut sheets
- Trained and experienced in lock-out, tag-out, and safe work practices
- Must be able to respond to emergencies 24/7 including after hours and weekends
- Best-practice and professional knowledge of industrial maintenance and standards
- Able to perform in a fast-paced environment
- Detail-oriented, cost-conscious, and deadline sensitive
- Able to climb stairs and ladders and be fall-protection trained
- Able to work at variable heights
- Able to lift, push, and pull 50 lbs.
- Able to work in roof height and outdoor environments; cold, wet, and cold storage temperatures
Preferred:
- At least 3 years of active experience with cooling processes, ammonia refrigeration, and freon-based facilities within a produce/food processing and storage facility
- Knowledge of chemical testing for cooling towers and ammonia systems
- Hazmat Responder Certification
Work Schedule
- 12-hour shifts: 6AM-6PM
- 2 days per week: Saturday and Sunday
- Night shifts, weekends, and holidays required
- Must be available 24/7 for emergency response including after hours and weekends
Compensation Range
- The US base salary range for this position is $35.85 - $42.25
- Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location
