Position Overview
The Specialty Pharmacy Technician works alongside pharmacists to ensure medications are safe, effective, and accurately prepared for patients. This role involves locating, dispensing, packing, and labeling prescribed medications, which are then reviewed by a pharmacist prior to dispensing. In addition to direct pharmacy support, the technician may assist with administrative tasks such as processing insurance claims, maintaining inventory, filing paperwork, and delivering excellent customer service. This position requires reliability, strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and proficiency with computers in a fast-paced healthcare setting.
Key Responsibilities

Receive and check the validity of prescriptions.

Process prescriptions electronically, ensuring accuracy and completeness of information.

Locate, select, and measure appropriate medications and dosages.

Maintain prescription records and file physician orders accurately.

Sort, stock, and monitor pharmacy inventory.

Answer patient and healthcare provider inquiries, referring complex issues to the pharmacist.

Research and resolve claims issues while providing timely, accurate customer service.

Comply with safety and regulatory requirements, maintaining a clean and safe pharmacy environment.

Resolve issues such as rejected insurance claims.

Provide courteous and prompt customer service by phone.

Triage and prioritize requests effectively.

Check medication expiration dates regularly.

Attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience

Required: High school diploma or equivalent.

Required: 2–3 years of retail pharmacy experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required: PTCB certification (or equivalent) and TN State Board of Pharmacy Registration.
Skills & Abilities

Excellent organizational, follow-up, and problem-solving skills.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency in computers, scanners, and pharmacy applications.

Strong knowledge of medications, dosage measurement, pharmacy law, and medical terminology.

Ability to perform basic math operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

Strong attention to detail, reliability, and ability to work independently.

Capacity to analyze situations, respond quickly, and work effectively in a team setting.
