Veterinary Technician

Newark, Delaware, United States; Wilmington, Delaware, United States

Are you a skilled Veterinary Technician who wants to work somewhere that actually trusts you to use your skills — in an urgent care setting where every shift matters?

First State Urgent Vet is seeking a Veterinary Technician to join our growing team!

At First State Urgent Vet, we're building something great: a team that works hard, supports each other, and genuinely has fun while caring for pets and their owners. Urgent care combines the best of general practice and emergency medicine — you'll triage walk-ins, perform life-saving treatments, and yes, still get puppy kisses during wellness visits. We do it all, and we do it with purpose and a sense of humor.

If you have grit, drive, and can jump in where needed without being asked — you'll fit right in here.

We are seeking a versatile, motivated team player who thrives in a fast-paced clinical environment, communicates clearly with clients and colleagues, and takes pride in delivering high-quality care throughout every stage of the patient visit.

If you're ready to grow with us and work somewhere that appreciates your skills and your personality, we'd love to meet you.

Responsibilities include:

  • Triaging walk-in patients and assessing emergent cases
  • Taking patient histories and educating clients clearly and compassionately
  • Performing venipuncture and placing IV catheters
  • Administering treatments including IV, SQ, and IM medications
  • Running in-house diagnostics including IDEXX laboratory equipment and digital radiology
  • Monitoring anesthesia and sedation throughout procedures
  • Providing ongoing hospitalized patient care and monitoring
  • Using and promoting low-stress handling techniques during restraint and treatments
  • Maintaining accurate, detailed medical records and treatment documentation
  • Reviewing treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions with clients clearly and compassionately
  • Building strong client relationships through education, communication, and attentive service

Schedule and compensation:

  • Compensation: $19 - 28 per hour, for each hour worked
  • Schedule: This is a full-time position, with a 4 x 10 schedule. With rotating weekend availability required — every other Saturday and Sunday.
    • Clinic hours are 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM, 7 days a week.
    • Please note: 7:00 PM is our last check-in time, not our closing time — some evenings may run later, and flexibility is a must. No formal on-call requirements.

Full-time Benefits Package*:

  • Bonus package: $500 - 2000 based on active, based on tenure and credentials
  • CE allowance: $500-$1,000 based on tenure and credentials
  • Health package: Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Life insurance and disability
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • 401k with company match
  • Paid time off in accordance with site policy and applicable law
  • Personal pet discount
  • Uniform allowance

*Part-time team members may be eligible for limited benefits in accordance with company policy and state law

Minimum qualifications and skill set:

  • 1+ years of veterinary technician or veterinary assistant experience
  • Active and good-standing Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) in the state of DE is preferred but not required
  • Proficiency in the following skills:
    • Patient assessment, triage, nursing care, and in-patient monitoring
    • Anesthetic induction, monitoring, and recovery
    • Surgical assistance and aseptic technique
    • Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
    • Radiology positioning and safety protocols
    • Medication administration and accurate drug calculations
    • Accurate medical record documentation
    • Client education and communication
    • Ability to prioritize tasks and multitask in a fast-paced environment
