About The Role
Whisper Aero is seeking an enthusiastic and driven Structural Engineer to assist in building next-generation air propulsion that delivers thrust more cleanly, efficiently, and quietly than ever before. This role will be focused on structural design, analysis and optimization of components and systems. They will drive key structural design decisions and work closely with our Structures Lead, Chief Engineer, and hardware team regularly. In this role you will work with the team to identify high level needs for future propulsors and test equipment and then develop concepts to address these needs.
What You’ll Do
- Participate in and present during reviews, provide feedback to the design and flight sciences teams.
- Use finite element analysis and classical methods to evaluate for strength, deflection, vibration, fatigue life, and damage tolerance using best modeling practices.
- Perform structural configuration layouts and sizing of future design propulsor and platform concepts.
- Provide testing support for flight projects, study tasks & proposals.
- Provide structural engineering knowledge to project personnel and contractors through all phases of the project lifecycle.
- Develop material allowables from novel materials
- Author analysis tools for designers to use in sizing new parts (scripts, spreadsheets, etc...)
- Provide support to customers for issues that arise in product integration
- Write technical reports that are accurate and comprehensive to be peer-reviewed by other team members.
Required Qualifications
- US Person Status
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering or related technical discipline with typically a minimum of 5 years of related experience; Masters degree in similar disciplines with a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or PhD in similar disciplines with a minimum of 1 year related experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of statics, solid mechanics, and free-body diagrams to perform classical hand-calculation methods
- Experience with finite element modeling with NX/Nastran, ANSYS, Abaqus, or others
- Experience with a 3D CAD package such as Solidworks, NX, CATIA V5, or Fusion 360
- Basic understanding of metallic and composite materials manufacturing
- Experience using Python, Julia, VBA, or Matlab
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience with aeroelastics or structural dynamics
- Experience with analytical aircraft structural analysis, eg. Bruhn, Niu, Flabel, Perry
- Experience with HyperX (Formerly HyperSizer)
- Experience with electric machines and motors
- Experience with composite layup definition and optimization
- Demonstrated hands on experience with at least one of the following:
- CNC machining, composites, 3D printing, prototyping, mechanical assembly
- Familiarity with data management, revision and version control: Git
- Pilot experience and/or aircraft maintenance experience
