About The Role

xAI is seeking a skilled Commissioning Engineer to support the deployment and operation of our world-class datacenters in Memphis, Tennessee. In this role, you will be responsible for the commissioning of critical infrastructure systems, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance for our AI supercomputing clusters. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, and network engineers, to test, validate, and bring online high-density computing environments. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, has a strong background in datacenter commissioning, and thrives in a fast-paced, innovative setting. This is an in-person role based in Memphis, Tennessee, and may require up to 10% travel.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and documentation of commissioning activities for datacenter systems, including electrical, mechanical, cooling, and fire suppression.
  • Perform functional testing, system integration testing, and performance validation to ensure all equipment meets design specifications and operational requirements.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams to resolve issues during commissioning phases and handover to operations.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning plans, checklists, and reports, ensuring compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and xAI's performance goals.
  • Troubleshoot and debug complex systems, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Support the optimization of datacenter infrastructure for energy efficiency, reliability, and scalability in support of AI workloads.
  • Conduct risk assessments and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for future datacenter builds.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in datacenter commissioning, facilities engineering, or related roles in high-tech environments.
  • Strong knowledge of datacenter systems, including power distribution, HVAC, cooling technologies, and backup systems.
  • Experience with commissioning tools, software, and protocols (e.g., BMS, SCADA, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 5+ years of experience commissioning large-scale datacenters or mission-critical facilities.
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) or AI infrastructure, including liquid cooling systems and high-density racking.
  • Certifications such as CDCP, CDCE, or PE license.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and methodologies (e.g., Agile, PMP).
  • Experience working in startup or fast-growth environments with a bias for action and innovation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure during critical commissioning phases.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed during commissioning activities.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in datacenter environments (e.g., noise, temperature variations).
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for vendor meetings or multi-site support.
