
Director of Multimedia
ABOUT THE JOB
The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Director of Multimedia in the Communications & Marketing Department of the ACLU’s National office in New York. This is a hybrid role that has in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month.
The ACLU Marketing & Communications Department creates, maintains, and expands message narratives to engage our supporters and other target audiences, to help protect and expand civil liberties and civil rights, and also illustrate the value and impact of the ACLU’s work. Through our messaging, engagement with newsmakers, our written and social content, branding, and visual identity, we encourage support for the ACLU and help to create a more perfect union.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Reporting to the Head of Brand Studio, the Director of Multimedia will lead the strategic and creative vision for the ACLU’s multimedia department. Overseeing a team of video producers, editors, animators, and podcast creators, this role is responsible for shaping the ACLU’s multimedia narratives—across visual, audio, and digital storytelling.
The Director of Multimedia will develop and execute innovative, digital-first content that engages audiences across platforms, translating complex organizational initiatives into compelling stories. With a deep understanding of the full production pipeline—from ideation to post-production—they will drive both original content creation and rapid-response storytelling, ensuring every project is executed with creative excellence. This role requires strong collaboration with internal teams to translate campaign goals into comprehensive production plans. At its core, this role calls for a creative leader and strong people manager who expertly harnesses storytelling to educate, inspire, and advance social justice.
YOUR DAY TO DAY
Creative Leadership
- Lead and oversee the creative direction for all multimedia projects, including video, audio, and digital content, ensuring alignment with the ACLU’s brand identity and mission.
- Foster innovation within the multimedia team, advocating for the creation of impactful, bold, and compelling content across visual, audio, and digital platforms.
- Collaborate with the Head of Brand Studio and team directors to develop strategic storytelling solutions that amplify the ACLU’s work.
Team Management & Development
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team of video producers, editors, animators, and podcast creators, fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and supportive environment.
- Provide clear direction, timely feedback, and guidance to ensure the team’s professional growth and skill development across multimedia formats.
- Oversee the team’s workflow, ensuring equitable distribution of tasks and efficient high-level project management.
- Manage the multimedia team’s budget and resources effectively, making strategic decisions on resource allocation.
- Identify freelance needs, coordinate the hiring of support staff during high-volume periods, and source and manage outside vendors to ensure seamless project execution.
Multimedia Execution & Oversight
- Oversee the entire multimedia production process, from ideation and strategy development to final execution, ensuring the highest standards of quality across video, audio, and digital content.
- Manage production for ACLU events, including pitching, producing, and photo/video capture
- Manage the production timeline and ensure all projects are completed on time, within scope, and meet brand and legal standards.
- Ensure final approvals and internal reviews are conducted efficiently
- Lead production efforts for special projects
- Support initiatives to expand the ACLU’s audience by creating engaging, accessible, and strategically targeted multimedia content.
Collaboration & Communication
- Work across the Marketing & Communications team to identify stories to amplify and prioritize the production of creative content that engages audiences and advances the ACLU’s mission.
- Serve as a key liaison between the multimedia team and other stakeholders, ensuring seamless collaboration and alignment across departments.
Data Asset Management
- Oversee and manage the Data Asset Management (DAM), ensuring efficient organization, storage, and retrieval of multimedia content across the organization.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Extensive experience in multimedia production, including proven leadership in the field.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor multidisciplinary creative teams in a dynamic environment.
- Strong storytelling skills with experience creating impactful video, audio, and digital content for both organic social and paid ad campaigns.
- Expertise in the full production pipeline, from ideation and pre-production to directing, editing, and post-production.
- Deep understanding of audience engagement strategies across social platforms.
- Ability to translate complex social justice issues into compelling, accessible content that educates and drives action.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects, stakeholders, and deadlines while aligning with organizational goals.
- Proficiency in video and audio production, including shooting, directing, editing, and sound design.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro & After Effects)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with experience working across departments to execute creative strategies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in mission-driven, advocacy, or nonprofit organizations.
- Familiarity with storytelling in the social justice space.
- Experience managing a Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.
- Background in event production, including live filming and content capture.
