The Role
The Financial Controller leads the finance function that keeps our airline operating reliably and compliantly. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, you will manage a team of 12 (10 accounting, 2 payroll) and be accountable for month‑end close, payroll accuracy, audit readiness, financial controls, and continuous process improvement. This is a hands‑on leadership role focused on building robust day‑to‑day finance operations, driving automation and standardization, and delivering timely, decision‑ready financial information to the executive team. The successful candidate will be a practicing CPA who thrives on mentoring staff, improving processes, and turning financial data into practical actions that improve operational reliability and business performance.
Responsibilities include
Leadership & Financial Management
- Lead and develop the accounting and payroll team through recruitment, training, performance management, and hands‑on coaching to build day‑to‑day operational capability
- Prioritize team structure, clear roles, and succession planning to ensure coverage and continuity
- Partner with the CFO and executive team on long-term financial planning, capital allocation, and risk management
- Contribute financial insights to support business growth and operational efficiency, translating insights into process changes and actionable tasks owned by the team
Financial Operations, Process & Compliance
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting with accuracy and timeliness
- Develop and maintain financial and payroll policies, procedures, and systems, prioritizing process simplification, error reduction, and automation opportunities
- Ensure readiness for and lead financial, payroll, and regulatory audits
- Ensure compliance with federal/provincial laws, collective agreements, and internal policies by embedding compliance steps into daily workflows and training
- Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company assets and financial security
- Research and apply accounting, payroll, and tax regulations, translating changes into updated processes, training, and system settings
- Lead incremental improvements in financial systems, reporting, and analytics to inform decisions, prioritizing high‑impact fixes and quick wins that reduce manual effort
- Stay current with industry standards, legislation, and best practices, and champion practical adoption of improvements across the finance function
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
- Completed CPA designation
- 7+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role overseeing both accounting and payroll functions
- Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, audits, and internal controls in a mid-to-large organization
- Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and related payroll legislation
- Proficiency in financial and payroll systems; experience implementing or optimizing software is an asset
- Proven leadership and coaching abilities
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now is an asset
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Position is located in Whitehorse, Yukon. Candidates must be willing to relocate should they not already reside in Whitehorse
