
Optical Engineer

The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and integration of lens systems for various applications focusing in imaging and projection optics. This role requires a deep understanding of optical principles, lens manufacturing processes, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product integration.
Role
Lens Design and Development:
Design and develop high-precision lens systems for various applications.
Create detailed 3D models and simulations to support lens design and development.
Perform optical simulations and interpret results to optimize lens performance.
Validate and sign off on lens designs before production release.
Optimize optical systems for manufacturability, cost and environmental conditions
Collaboration and Integration:
Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of lens systems into larger optomechanical assemblies.
Participate in early concept development and feasibility studies for new products.
Collaborate with design engineers to create engineering documentation, including DFMEA and DVP&R.
Prototyping and Testing:
Lead the prototyping and testing of lens systems to ensure they meet design specifications and performance criteria.
Define and coordinate testing and validation activities at the system and component levels.
Conduct root-cause analysis and resolve issues encountered during prototyping and production.
Provide information and review drawings for optical components manufacturing drawings
Innovation and Best Practices:
Stay up to date with emerging technologies, trends, and regulatory changes in optical engineering.
Implement best practices and provide training to colleagues as needed.
Perform benchmark studies to identify alternative solutions and improve existing designs.
Qualifications
Experience:
10+ years of engineering experience in optical design and development.
Proven experience in designing and developing lens systems for imaging and projection applications.
Knowledge of lens manufacturing processes, including injection molding, plastic bonding, glass polish and grinding, diamond turning and glass molding.
Experience in design of freeform lenses
Experience with optical simulation software (Zemax).
Skills:
Strong understanding of optical principles and lens design fundamentals.
Proficiency in GD&T and interpreting optical simulation reports.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage complex projects with tight timelines and budget constraints.
Education:
Master’s degree in optical engineering, physics or related field
PHD in optical engineering
Salary Range: $110,000-135,000
