Director, Product Management - DoD Cloud

As Director, Product Management for Appian Defense Cloud you will define and execute the market vision for the new enclave of Appian Cloud specifically designed for the mission critical Appian applications used by customers in the United States Department of Defense (DoD). You will be the product leader responsible for understanding the wide array of DoD use cases and requirements as they apply to Software-as-a-Service and Cloud Service Providers. You will bring your extensive experience with and deep knowledge about defense IT systems and procedures to inform the future roadmap of Appian Defense Cloud as well as how to properly position it for success in the DoD market. The duties for this position skew heavily toward the outbound product management end of the spectrum and include the full scope of go-to-market activities aligned with DoD acquisition process such as Planning, Programming, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE), & DoD 5000 series directives. These duties include product positioning, market analysis, sales and marketing enablement, and content creation. Expect extensive interactions with prospects, customers, and analysts, and DoD stakeholders including Program Executive Officers (PEO), Program Managers (PM), and Authorizing Officials (AO), including the possibility for travel. Driving adoption of Appian Defense Cloud will be your primary objective.

This position reports to the Head of Product for the Platform Engineering Strategic Business Unit, which is responsible for the development and operations of the Appian Cloud offering. You will form a strong collaborative relationship with your colleagues in the Product department who are responsible for the product architecture strategy and roadmap for the wider Appian Cloud portfolio. You will also drive alignment with the Sales, Marketing, Customer Success, Information Security, and Solution Engineering departments to ensure the best possible outcomes for the Appian Defense Cloud product offering.

What you'll do:

  • Define the market vision for Appian Defense Cloud, helping to shape the Appian platform and grow our Defense and warfighting lines of business by advising leadership on critical investments.
  • Serve as the main point of contact within the Product department for Appian Defense Cloud prospects, delivery teams, and customers.
  • Advise Sales and Marketing on the current capabilities and future roadmap for Appian Defense Cloud and how it is well-fit for Department of Defense requirements, including organizations such as DISA, Joint Staff J-6 directorate, as well as service-specific PMOs requirements.
  • Create and execute the go-to-market and product launch activities for Appian Defense Cloud.
  • Oversee alignment of Appian Defense Cloud service delivery with Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) best practices including incident response, troubleshooting, and change management, ensuring such processes can withstand DoD audits and meet SLAs for mission critical systems.  
  • Act as the subject matter expert for DoD cybersecurity requirements applying to cloud service offerings, including compliance with the DISA Risk Management Framework (RMF), Authority to Operate (ATO) processes via Enterprise Mission Assurance Support Service (eMASS), and Impact Levels 4/5/6.
  • Represent the full spectrum of Appian Defense Cloud capabilities to customers at both the business and technical level.
  • Gather, analyze, and synthesize emerging trends in requirements in order to inform the backlog for future enhancements to Appian Defense Cloud.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers responsible for the portfolio of Appian Cloud features and capabilities to deliver a roadmap that continually improves the Appian Defense Cloud offering.
  • Collaborate with DISA and DoD stakeholders to ensure compliance with Secure Cloud Computing Architecture (SCCA) such as Virtual Data Center Security Stack (VDSS) and Cloud Access Points (CAP). Drive roadmap priorities that align with evolving DISA's Secure Cloud Computing Architecture (SCCA) guidance.
  • Define product capabilities that integrate with DoD ICAM solutions (ie. PKI, CAC/PIV, and enterprise identity brokers). Ensure support for attribute based access control (ABAC) and zero trust architecture in alignment with DoD CIO mandates.

About you:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Well-versed in Department of Defense organizations such as DISA and the Joint Staff J-6 directorate.
  • Firm understanding of Information Technology Approval System (ITAS) processes.
  • Knowledgeable about the IT stacks and integrations in the Department of Defense, especially as they relate to interaction with vendor-managed Software-as-a-Service cloud offerings.
  • Prior experience in a product management role for an IT product offering specifically tailored to Department of Defense requirements.
  • Experience interacting with and discussing product use cases with DoD program owners, Authorizing Officials (AO), cybersecurity officers (ISSM/ISSO), and Program Executive Offices (PEOs).
  • Familiarity with key Defense operations such as force structure planning and resourcing, intelligence and mission management, digital investigations and case management, contracting and acquisition automation, readiness and logistics operations, ERP readiness and modernization, and financial audit and reporting automation.
  • SECRET clearance or higher through the SF86 clearance process is highly preferred.
