Risk Analytics Wrangler - Woo Payments

Remote

We are the people behind WordPress.com, Tumblr, Jetpack, WooCommerce, and more! As a member of the Risk Operations team, you’ll be at the forefront of protecting payment solutions and the merchants who use WooCommerce, Tumblr and WordPress.com, among other products.

WooCommerce is an open-source solution that allows users to customize every part of an online store and is the most popular ecommerce platform on the web. We have a huge footprint, but we’re a small company. That means everyone here has the opportunity to make a visible, profound, and lasting difference while helping store owners that rely on WooCommerce every day.

As a member of the Risk Operations team, you’ll work cross-functionally with support, product, engineering, data, and at times directly with customers, to ensure our solutions are secure and that our platform is a safe place to run a business!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and document data-informed processes for risk management across our suite of products and features, with a focus on WooPayments.
  • Lead projects designed to document and expand data sources required to detect and prevent fraud in Merchant Risk and Transaction Risk domains.
  • Develop and test rules for fraud prevention in internal and third-party tools, and partner to operationalize these where necessary for manual review workflows.
  • Perform analysis and research on current and historical data that helps us make the right decisions for risk management, to protect and accelerate the growth of Payments products and features, and to limit fraud losses.
  • Provide P2 reports on a consistent cadence about current trends in Risk domains and impacts of the work Risk performs. Create business intelligence dashboards to guide decision making.
  • Support the Risk Operations Manager through ongoing initiatives to develop the risk platform.
  • Remain informed about current trends in fraud and risk affecting our suite of products by actively participating in reviews of customer accounts, collaborating with Fraud Analysts, and through ongoing education (reading, conference attendance).
  • Partner with our internal cross-functional team members (Data, Engineering) and partners (Product, Support, Operations, Finance) to surface key insights and takeaways to drive effective decision making.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • You enjoy research and investigation, and are curious and methodical in your approach to work.
  • Can leverage your technical skills in SQL and business intelligence tools to surface meaningful insights and opportunities for improvement to risk management.
  • Enjoy identifying opportunities for improvement or innovation in a large pool of data, and are capable of identifying a vulnerability or opportunity, defining it clearly, and operationalizing effective responses for the team.
  • Have strong technical and analytical skills in SQL, Sheets, Looker and/or Superset.
  • Have at least 3+ years in similar strategic, analytical, and operational roles. Have experience translating business problems related to fraud and risk into questions, and collaborating with experts (Data, Engineering) to find answers and develop solutions.
  • Risk, fraud, and payments/ecommerce experience would be highly desirable. An understanding of how to evaluate customers and scenarios for potential fraud risk or brand risk and make supportable decisions is key.
  • Experience with using WordPress, WooCommerce, and Akismet are highly desirable.
  • Experience with use of dashboards and/or business intelligence reporting to inform decisions (Looker, Spreadsheet).
  • Are a strong and clear communicator. Risk at Automattic relies on daily communication via our P2 internal blogging system, Linear, and Slack. Defining and communicating ongoing issues, requesting feedback from affected teams, and advocating for solutions is a must.
  • Are a cross-team collaborator. Risk at Automattic serves multiple payments products and features, each with their own leads and stakeholders, and requires regular ad-hoc collaboration to be effective.
  • Are a proactive team member, comfortable with setting and managing your own priorities, keeping teams up-to-date on current work, and jumping in to assist when needed by the team or by partners.

Salary range: $85,000-$110,000 USD.  Please note that salary ranges are global, regardless of location, and we pay in local currency.

We are searching for high-caliber candidates with the skills and qualities to have a net positive for Automattic. Pay will reflect the potential contribution and the impact you can bring, which may, in some cases, go beyond the range stated.

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
