Marketing Manager

San Francisco, CA

Avela is a Nobel Prize winning platform for families to navigate their child’s educational journey. Parents can find, apply, register, and pay for school and programs for their children, all from a common application system with saved profiles. Avela also powers backend admissions and operational workflows, making it easy for schools, districts, and educational providers to equitably serve students. We’re like “OpenTable for Education” or “Mindbody for Schools.”

Role

We have a big vision and are making great progress towards it – we are known in the space, have large customers across dozens of major cities, and an amazing team of technologists and practitioners – and now we’re investing in the Marketing team to accelerate our growth.

Avela is looking for a talented, versatile marketer to join our small but growing team. As our second marketing hire, you will partner with leaders across the company and industry to build our brand and grow our pipeline. Reporting to the Marketing Lead, you will co-own the entire marketing playbook – from planning and development to execution and performance measurement – with direct responsibility for demand generation activities, including paid advertising.

Location

We’re a semi-remote company with hubs in San Francisco and Boston. The San Francisco hub includes the CEO, Marketing Lead, and Sales Lead, so we strongly prefer candidates living in the SF Bay Area to facilitate in-person collaboration and social connection.

Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to directly impact our company’s growth trajectory and take on a diverse range of responsibilities, including:

  • Running multi-channel campaigns
  • Managing events and conferences
  • Building demand-generation programs
  • Growing and engaging our social media presence
  • Developing high-impact content and collateral

While this is a generalist position, we’re looking for someone with a strong background and love for demand-gen and digital marketing, but depending on your skills and career aspirations, there’s room to take on new challenges in additional areas you’re passionate about. This is a hands-on role that requires someone who thrives in a fast-paced, startup environment, can work independently, and excels at juggling multiple priorities.

Specific Example Tasks:

  • Build Lead Lists - Identify customers matching Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) and create lists with contact info for outbound targeting using tools like LinkedIn, RocketReach, and district websites.
  • Cold Outreach - Write and send highly targeted cold emails to prospects and collaborate with team members to scale your efforts.
  • Website - Co-manage our website content and copy, including updating with latest messaging and positioning.
  • Social Media - Create and post content regularly, but also develop and execute a broader plan to grow our following.
  • Webinars - Organize webinar series with speakers, build and execute campaigns to ensure registrations, share recording with mailing lists.
  • Content - Write and/or repurpose content for our blog, social media, and nurture emails.
  • Conferences - Manage our event calendar, event sponsorships, booth setup, and coordinate attendance and post-event follow-ups.
  • Sales Enablement - Answer questions from sales team, provide collateral and materials.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 4–8 years in marketing, with exposure to multiple functions (e.g., product marketing, content creation, demand generation, communications, design, events, advertising, and social media), and strong expertise in the areas of demand-gen and digital marketing preferred.
  • You should have examples of campaigns you have come up with, the creative you’ve built and trafficked, as well as the results and learnings.
  • You have managed event participation from securing sponsorships, pre-event outreach, onsite booth management and lead-gen, and post-event follow-up and measurement.
  • Execution: Proven ability to take projects from concept to completion, managing timelines, stakeholders, and outcomes effectively.
  • Skills: You are somewhat of a Swiss Army Knife in that you can plan campaigns, manage projects, write copy, handle some design work, build and present reports, and represent the company publicly.
  • Flexibility: Comfort with ambiguity, working independently in a dynamic environment, and juggling competing priorities with ease.
  • Tech Savviness: Experience with the tools we use like HubSpot, Canva, and Asana, to name a few.
  • Travel: Ability to travel domestically a few times per quarter for events and team gatherings. Must live within 45 minutes of a major airport (e.g. SFO, OAK, BOS).
  • Industry Background: Familiarity with the education and/or edtech space is a nice-to-have.

Why Join Us?

  • Impact: Play a pivotal role in shaping the future of a mission-driven company at the forefront of educational innovation.
  • Autonomy: Enjoy the freedom to own your projects while having the support of a collaborative team.
  • Growth: Expand your skill set, take on new challenges, and grow your career as Avela scales.
  • Flexibility: Work remotely with occasional in-person collaboration opportunities.

If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, we’d love to hear from you!

Company

We’re like “OpenTable for Education” or “Mindbody for Schools.”

For students and families, this simplifies the process of finding and applying to educational programming. For schools and districts, this streamlines operations and helps increase enrollment (and hence, revenue).

We sell our application and enrollment platform directly to school districts, charter networks, other educational providers, cities, and states. We work with school districts and charter networks across the country, including in Oakland, Seattle, Hartford, Tulsa, New Orleans, Newark, and Jersey City. We also work with a range of nonprofits and NGOs, including Teach for America and the Inter-American Development Bank, as well as the US Military.

Our platform has four parts to cover each stage of the application journey, from exploring options to applying and final selection and admission:
Avela Explore - Mobile-optimized school finder and opportunity navigator
Avela Apply - Streamlined application management system and tracking
Avela Match - Research-based admission and student assignment lottery system.
Avela Enroll - Online registration, transfers, and enrollment platform with document collection.

Location

We are a flexible, fully remote company, however all full time employees must live in the United States and meet the work authorization policies below. We are building geographic "hubs" to facilitate collaboration, so prefer candidates who are located in/around Boston, New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, or are willing to commute into them for monthly on-sites.

Colleagues are expected to work from a quiet location with reliable, high speed internet, during continental US hours, and in accordance with our collaboration norms outlined below. #LI-Remote

Work Authorization

Although we are strongly supportive of immigrants and individuals of all backgrounds, unfortunately, as a small startup, we are not in a position to sponsor visas and are only able to consider candidates who are authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to working together in the future.

Remote Working and Collaboration Norms

As a remote-first company, we think deeply about aligning on shared values and collaboration norms. We trust our team and empower everyone to find the right balance for their productivity, but also seek to facilitate synchronous collaboration and minimize asynchronous latency.

We ask everyone to have access to a quiet environment, free from distractions during working hours with high speed broadband internet. (One of our benefits is that we'll cover a WeWork membership!) Our default is video-on for meetings to foster relationships and allow non-verbal communication cues to come through, however we understand that from time-to-time it’s helpful to turn video off. We also ask colleagues to have a proper office setup with desk, external monitor, quality webcam, etc. (Another benefit is that we cover up to $2,000 of office setup.)

For full time roles, we expect colleagues to work a normal business day in a continental US timezone of their choice, so long as there's overlap from 12pm - 6pm ET. This ensures sufficient time for synchronous collaboration, but also facilitates flexibility in your schedule. (We are open to other working arrangements, but this must be approved in advance before joining.) We also expect full time employees to join for biannual week-long team offsites (we cover the costs, of course).

We Encourage You To Apply

Avela is a safe, inclusive workplace for people of all backgrounds and walks of life. We strongly encourage you to apply if you are from a marginalized or underrepresented group, even if you don't meet all of the job requirements. If you believe this is a role that you’ll be excited to work in every day, want to be a part of a culture like ours, and will be relentless about pushing boundaries to succeed, please apply.

Tech Stack (for Product/Engineering Roles):

Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
