Materials Developer
IN A NUTSHELL
At Bellroy, we believe business can be a force for good in the world, and we’re working hard to create a more vibrant future. As a certified B Corp, we’re serious about making products that are environmentally responsible and built to last. That’s where you come in.
We’re looking for a highly organised, purpose-driven Materials Developer. You’ll work closely with our design, development and production teams to research, test and develop new textiles, leathers, trims and hardware that elevate our products and meet our rigorous sustainability and performance standards. With the support of our Materials Lead you’ll take projects from initial concept to final stage, tracking progress carefully, asking the right questions, and knowing when to loop in others for input or support.
You’ve got a head for the technical stuff and a knack for spotting the finer details. Someone who can build strong systems, juggle multiple timelines, and push through roadblocks to get things done properly. If that sounds like you, read on.
YOU COULD BE THE ONE, IF YOU…
- Have a minimum of 2–5 years’ experience in a softgoods environment. Ideally in accessories, performance apparel, bags or the outdoor industry. You’re familiar with how materials, trims and hardware come together in a commercial product
- Bring technical knowledge of materials, and have experience working with vendors to help turn good ideas into reliable, scalable solutions
- Are highly organised and process-driven. You manage timelines with care, document thoroughly, and keep your work consistently tidy and trackable
- Care deeply about the sustainability of performance materials and strive for ongoing improvement
- Can work independently and keep things moving, but know when to engage stakeholders, to clarify priorities, raise potential risks, and align on next steps
- Take pride in seeing a project through. From early research and development, through to testing and validation, all the way to final handover
IF YOU WERE HERE LAST MONTH, YOU MIGHT HAVE…
- Met with our Design and CMF team to scope out upcoming product ranges, identifying new material needs and clarifying performance or aesthetic goals based on intended use
- Begun researching and developing materials with sustainability front of mind, liaising with suppliers to explore options that meet our environmental and functional standards
- Confirmed that shortlisted materials could meet our cost and lead time requirements, and shared early updates with key internal stakeholders to keep plans aligned
- Arranged performance testing for selected textiles or leathers, reviewing results carefully and collaborating with mills to resolve any issues, you may have even suggested additional testing based on the products intended end use
- Flagged a potential production delay, problem-solved with our manufacturing partners, and kept the wider team informed to avoid downstream disruption
- Coordinated with the Product Development team to ensure our T1 factories had all the required bulk and SMS materials in time for key milestone product sampling
- Helped the Brand & Communications team accurately tell the story of a new material — sharing sustainability credentials and technical details to support clear messaging
- Tracked your progress across all of this, documented decisions, and made sure stakeholders knew what was done, what was coming next, and where their input might be needed
