As a Senior Software Engineer on Clear Street’s Payments team, you’ll play a key role in scaling and modernising our rapidly evolving global payments infrastructure. You’ll develop highly reliable, API-driven systems that integrate seamlessly with external banks and payment gateways, streamlining complex operational workflows and supporting our expansion into new lines of business, including digital initiatives. Working closely with cross-functional partners, you’ll contribute to large-scale, high-impact initiatives that enhance our core payments offering, significantly reduce manual operational processes, and offer our customers a smooth payment experience, helping to shape the future of the Clear Street financial ecosystem.

What You’ll Do

  • Engineer highly reliable, API-driven payment systems that streamline operations and support our global expansion.
  • Translate product and design requirements into clean, maintainable and well-tested components.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, business, operations, designers and back-end engineers to deliver high-quality experiences.
  • Identify and resolve performance, accessibility, and usability issues across the application.
  • Participate in code reviews, contribute to shared component libraries, and help uphold our engineering standards.
  • Support the operational health of your features and help maintain a high SLA.

The Team

You will work with a team of talented, passionate and highly collaborative engineers. Working together, we have built a platform that serves institutional clients and is at the forefront of technological innovation. Our engineers take pride in not just the value we provide our customers but the quality of our work. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies, collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and make a meaningful impact on the financial industry. We value creativity, innovation, strong work ethics, and we are committed to providing our team members with the support and resources they need to succeed.

Tech Stack

Java Spring Boot, Kafka, gRPC/REST, Kubernetes and Cloud (AWS or Azure).

What We’re Looking For

  • Master Java and Spring Boot, and comfortably make tweaks in TypeScript/React, Go, and Python.
  • A proven track record of driving technical decisions and owning complex, large-scale engineering problems end-to-end.
  • Hands-on experience building scalable architectures utilizing Kafka and Kubernetes for robust, resilient integrations.
  • Solid understanding of global payment ecosystems, external banking APIs, and streamlining complex operational workflows.
  • Strong command of software design patterns, distributed systems, clean code principles, and automated testing strategies.
  • Ability to actively manage technical debt, negotiate requirements, and ship reliable solutions without demanding perfection.
  • Actively advocate for better tooling, overhaul inefficient processes, and push our engineering practices forward.
  • A highly collaborative mindset with a preference for collectively solving intricate architectural challenges.

"Don't meet every single requirement? Apply anyway! We are looking for strong engineers with a growth mindset, not perfect resumes. If this role excites you, we want to hear from you."

Race & Ethnicity Definitions

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "Armed forces service medal veteran" means a veteran who, while serving on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service, participated in a United States military operation for which an Armed Forces service medal was awarded pursuant to Executive Order 12985.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 07/31/2029

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
