Intern, Portfolio Finance
Who We Are Looking For
Clearway Energy Group LLC’s Portfolio Finance team is seeking a summer intern, reporting to the Director of Portfolio Finance. The Portfolio Finance team is responsible for leading the funding and term conversion process with tax equity investors, cash equity investors, and lenders for Clearway’s utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. In addition, the Portfolio Finance team leads operating-period asset optimization transactions including refinancings, acquisitions of investor interests in our partnerships, and other asset restructurings.
This hybrid position is part of the 10-week Summer Internship Program at Clearway beginning in June 2025 and is based out of Clearway’s San Diego (Del Mar) regional office.
We are looking for current juniors pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Engineering, Math, Economics, Tax, Accounting, or a related field.
Throughout this summer internship program, you’ll get exposure to real projects and challenges while gaining first-hand professional experience. At Clearway, you’ll gain access to an innovative and fast-paced work environment. You’ll also participate in networking and learning events with your fellow intern cohort.
Program Timeline:
Applications Close: March 7
Interviews: March and April
Final Decision: Offers likely extended in April
Program Dates: June 2 – August 8
What You'll Be Doing
Financial Model Optimization
- Refine Microsoft Excel-based project finance “tracking models”, which are used to track equity investor returns, with new functionality that allows for streamlined updating of “actuals”, valuation of life to date and future cash flows, and implementation of “scenario analysis” tools.
- Modifications to cash distribution waterfall files, which allow Clearway to project distributions through the capital stack.
Live Transaction Support
- The Portfolio Finance Intern will be a key member of a live “deal team” overseeing the upcoming funding process for one of Clearway’s utility-scale wind, solar or battery energy storage projects. The Portfolio Finance Intern will be tasked with creating and/or overseeing the transaction checklist of documentation deliverables required for funding, bringdown financial model updates checklist, and other processes that help the deal team prepare for funding.
- Coordinate with internal teams, including Construction, Development, Accounting and Legal, to advance certain deliverables required for funding.
- Support presentations and reports on transaction status, risks, and benefits to the Leadership Team.
The Portfolio Finance Intern will be assigned to an individual project and will present results of the project to leadership at the end of the summer.
What You'll Bring
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and understanding of key financial concepts such as discounted cash flow analysis, time value of money, internal rate of return, and net present value.
- Ability to work well in a collaborative environment that emphasizes attention to detail, meeting deadlines, and working together to achieve company-wide and deal-specific objectives.
- Intellectual curiosity and an interest in renewable energy.
- Strong interpersonal skills. You’re willing to ask questions, listen to your colleagues, and contribute your ideas.
- Self-motivated, dependable, and accountable. This means showing up, being present, and being eager to dive into the workday. If you ever feel like you’ve completed all your tasks and have time to spare, you’re eager to speak up and ask what else you can do.
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and take ownership of projects and assignments.
What Would Be Nice
- Project Finance modeling experience (i.e., discounted cash-flow analysis with multiple investors).
- Experience working in the power or infrastructure industry (or demonstrated strong interest).
- Background with VBA and an interest in sharpening those skills through working on real-world projects.
