Backend - Principal Engineer
The Opportunity
We have an outstanding career opportunity for Backend- Principal Engineer at Bangalore location. As a Backend Principal Engineer on the Clumio team, you serve as a technical leader in the control and management plane of the cloud-native data protection platform. Reporting to the Engineering Director, this role combines hands-on engineering with architectural leadership, shaping systems that are foundational to customer data protection and recovery.
About the Team
The Clumio Backend team designs, builds, and operates core backend systems that support Clumio's cloud-native data protection platform. For many customers, data protection is not a "nice-to-have" capability, but a foundational requirement driven by compliance, audit, and security mandates. In these environments, recovery performance, cost efficiency, strong governance, and reliable operation at scale are critical differentiators. The team builds and operates key backend components of the platform's control and management plane, playing an integral role in how customers securely interact with, configure, and manage their data protection environments.
Built on a cloud-native architecture, the Backend team develops shared services and well-defined interfaces that abstract complexity from underlying systems and enable consistent, reliable, and scalable interactions across the platform. This work supports the continued evolution of the platform, enabling new capabilities, data sources, and workflows to be added efficiently and safely. Beyond core data protection workflows, the Backend team helps enable essential SaaS capabilities across the platform, including lifecycle management, observability, usage and cost insights, and intelligent analytics that support effective operation and informed customer decision-making.
Working closely with product, frontend, infrastructure, quality engineering, and customer-facing teams, the Backend team focuses on building highly reliable, scalable, and operable distributed systems that form a critical part of Clumio's enterprise-grade cloud data protection platform.
What you’ll do…
- You own and drive cross-cutting technical initiatives that span multiple services and define core platform capabilities across shared services such as control planes, policy management, and operational services.
- This includes designing and evolving platform abstractions, making architectural decisions that balance correctness, cost, scalability, and operational simplicity, and leading the execution of complex projects from design through production rollout.
- You are responsible for setting technical direction and ensuring that architectural decisions are realized in high-quality production systems.
- You remain deeply hands-on, spending significant time writing and reviewing code, solving complex technical problems, and participating in production operations.
- You work closely with Senior Engineers, Product, and Customer Success teams to guide designs, incorporate operational and customer feedback, and establish technical patterns that allow the platform to scale and evolve across multiple cloud environments.
Who you are…
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant ownership of complex, production backend or platform systems from design through operation.
- Experience in at least one modern programming language such as Go (Preferred), Python, Java, or Rust.
- Experience leading ambiguous, high-impact technical initiatives, driving solutions from problem definition to production delivery.
- Strong ability to translate business, customer, and operational requirements into clear technical designs, APIs, and system architectures.
- Experience in designing, building, and evolving distributed, cloud-native systems, with emphasis on correctness, scalability, operability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
- Ownership of non-trivial production systems, including diagnosing real-world issues, improving reliability, and iterating based on operational feedback.
- Experience making high-impact architectural decisions, evaluating trade-offs, and clearly communicating them to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Highly collaborative and self-driven, with a strong sense of shared ownership, and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional and geographically distributed teams, fostering open communication and alignment across time zones.
- Security and SaaS experience strongly preferred.
