Engineering Analyst - Management Consulting

The Engineering Analyst is a junior position that will support technical projects within the DB Center for Net Zero Transformation in Rail and Transit, under the guidance of senior consultants, engineers, and subject matter experts. This role primarily encompasses performing research and analysis on client problems and opportunities, conducting vehicle powertrain simulations, writing technical reports and related documentation, and preparing slides and similar presentations for both Executive Management and clients. This position works independently and as part of a team to deliver high quality work outputs within budget and in a timely manner.
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Prepare and maintain input data for powertrain, energy demand, and emissions modelling efforts. This could include digitizing railway track data into machine readable formats, maintaining an emissions factors database, and a vehicle specifications database.
- Conduct vehicle powertrain simulations using MATLAB, Simulink, and similar tools.
- Assist with emissions modeling using GREET and other software based tools.
- Visualize data and key takeaways using MS PowerPoint, MS Word, and similar software.
- Assist in preparing technical documents and associated engineering analyses, such as written reports and spreadsheets.
- Prepare slide decks and illustrative visuals to communicate technical insights and results to internal and external audiences with a range of subject matter knowledge.
- Produce high quality deliverables within budget and scope.
- Contribute to improving the transportation system in North America and beyond – driving sustainability, equity, and innovation in public transit, passenger rail, and freight rail.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and provide support in research, analysis, and presentation of findings on various Management Consulting projects
- Support client relations, marketing activities, and scope development.
Requirements:
- Ability to work in the United States or Canada
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering (preferably electrical or mechanical) or a related technical field. Experience with rail vehicles is a plus.
- Outstanding analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills and an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset; ability to be self-directed and to be an independent contributor to the team; ability to work independently; aptitude to quickly grasp new concepts and effectively produce results.
- Experience with Python especially with NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, and Matplotlib for analyzing large datasets, developing post-processing scripts, and visualizing simulation outputs. Providing access to an existing Git repository is considered an asset.
- Experience developing, modifying, and validating simulation models for complex electromechanical and energy systems using MATLAB/Simulink is considered an asset.
- Strong ability to synthesize complex information into actionable insights and summaries using various software tools, eg: Adobe Illustrator, Powerpoint, etc.
- Strong ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to apply structured reasoning and critical thinking to evaluate systems and procedures.
- Proficiency in data analysis and reporting (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Python, MATLAB, etc.).
- Familiarity with zero-emission propulsion concepts and vehicles is considered an asset
- Field experience with vehicles and vehicle instrumentation is considered an asset
- Experience with relevant techno-economic analysis and associated concepts (i.e., discounted cashflows, benefit-cost-ratios, rate-of-return, etc.) is considered an asset.
- Registration with a professional engineering body is considered an asset (e.g., registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training).
Working Conditions and Travel:
You will primarily work from your home office and/or a well-lit, heated and air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. Access to a company office is dependent on location. Overnight travel by land and air in the USA and Canada may be required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work at a computer workstation for periods up to 4 hours at a time
- Ability to speak on the telephone and/or video calls for a total of up to 8 hours per day
- Ability to sit for up to 3 hours without breaks at meetings
- Ability to participate in client site visits and meetings
- Ability to walk and stand for up to 4 hours without breaks at site visits and meetings
We offer an annual gross salary between $80,000 - $90,000 USD (for US based employees) or $85,000 - $97,000 CAD (for Canada based employees) for full-time employment, depending on professional qualifications and experience.
