Software Engineer (Data), Business Tech Solutions

London, UK

Snapshot

Are you an experienced Software Engineer ready to make a significant contribution, developing the data foundations and AI-powered solutions that will transform how our organization operates and innovates?

Join Google DeepMind's Business Tech Solutions team! In this role, you will collaborate closely with our Core Analytics team, focusing your expertise on three crucial areas. Firstly, you'll own and evolve their infrastructure with an emphasis on reliability, developing custom tooling to enhance efficiency and scalability. Secondly, you'll tackle deep data engineering challenges, building and optimizing critical pipelines and foundational data systems. Finally, you'll lead the creation of new data-adjacent tools and systems, incorporating AI to innovate and empower our internal operations.

This is a unique opportunity to combine deep technical expertise in software/data engineering with the practical application of AI, directly contributing to how our teams operate and make data-driven decisions.

About us

Google DeepMind: Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

Business Tech Solutions (BTS): BTS is a key team within Google DeepMind’s broader Technical Operations & Analytics (TO&A) group – dedicated to building robust systems, processes, and technology that support data-led decisions and power GDM operations at scale. As part of this mission, BTS designs, develops, and manages critical technology platforms that significantly enhance internal productivity and effectiveness. This role will collaborate deeply with Core Analytics – TO&A’s data analytics team – to drive the infrastructure behind organising, modeling, and deploying data to guide Google DeepMind's strategy and decisions.

The role

We are looking for a seasoned Software Engineer who excels at designing, building, and maintaining robust, scalable systems, with some experience in data engineering. You should thrive on tackling complex technical challenges and translating internal needs into effective, efficient solutions. This role offers a unique opportunity to work across critical internal functions – from supporting analytics capabilities with solid data infrastructure to streamlining operations with AI based tooling – directly impacting how the organisation functions and innovates. This involves designing and implementing scalable data pipelines and infrastructure, developing and iterating on practical AI-driven tools for internal processes, and collaborating closely with stakeholders such as analytics teams and operational groups.

Key responsibilities

  • Deep Data Engineering & Foundational Systems: Design, develop, deploy, and maintain robust and scalable data pipelines and critical foundational data systems.
  • SRE for Core Analytics Infrastructure & Tooling: Proactively ensure optimal performance, reliability, and scalability of data infrastructure.
  • Full-Stack Tool & AI Solution Development: Lead the design, build, and refinement of new data-adjacent tools and AI based systems.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration & Partnership: Work effectively and collaboratively with engineers, data analysts, project managers, and other stakeholders across different teams.
  • Technical Leadership & Team Growth: Champion high engineering standards, contribute to the team's technical strategy and actively participate in knowledge sharing.

About you

We're looking for a highly experienced and impactful Software Engineer with the following skills and experience:

  • Extensive Software Engineering Experience: Proven track record (typically 3+ years) in professional software engineering roles, demonstrating experience in designing, building, and maintaining complex systems, data infrastructure, or internal tools.
  • Complex Problem Solving & System Design: Demonstrated ability to analyze ambiguous requirements, break down complex technical or operational problems, and design robust, scalable, and maintainable system architectures.
  • Database Proficiency: Strong understanding of and practical experience with relational databases (SQL), including schema design, query optimization, and data modeling. Familiarity with NoSQL databases is beneficial.
  • Data Pipeline & Infrastructure Experience: Demonstrated ability in designing, building, and maintaining robust data pipelines and the underlying infrastructure. Experience with relevant frameworks and technologies is key, for example, working with distributed processing systems like Apache Beam or Flume, and orchestrating SQL pipelines and workflows using tools such as Apache Airflow or Luigi.
  • Full-Stack Development Proficiency: Experience developing both frontend (e.g., using JavaScript frameworks like React/Angular, HTML, CSS) and backend (e.g. Python, Java, Go) components for web applications.
  • Effective Communication & Collaboration: Ability to clearly articulate technical designs, trade-offs, and decisions to diverse audiences (technical and non-technical). Proven ability to collaborate effectively within and across engineering and stakeholder teams.

In addition, the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience Developing AI-Driven Tools: Experience designing and building practical tools or applications that leverage AI technologies to solve specific business problems or automate tasks.
  • Technical Project Leadership: Experience formally or informally leading technical projects or complex workstreams, demonstrating capabilities in planning, execution, and managing technical risks.
  • Advanced Mentorship & Coaching: Demonstrated experience actively mentoring or coaching other engineers, making significant contributions to their technical development and growth.

What we can offer you:

  • Direct Impact on Internal Operations: Directly influence how internal teams work by designing, building, and improving the critical tools, infrastructure, and automated processes they rely on daily, translating your engineering efforts into tangible efficiency gains.
  • Exposure to Diverse Technical Challenges: Tackle a wide variety of intellectually stimulating engineering problems across different internal domains – from scalable data infrastructure and AI-driven tooling to full-stack applications that enhance productivity.
  • Opportunity for Technical Innovation & Ownership: Drive the adoption of new technologies and engineering approaches within the team. Take ownership of key internal systems with the autonomy to propose and implement innovative solutions.
  • Visibility with Key Internal Stakeholders: Partner directly with leads and stakeholders within analytics, operations, People and Culture, and other key internal functions, shaping the technical solutions they depend on and influencing technical direction within these areas.
  • Collaborative & Supportive Engineering Environment: Be part of a skilled and supportive engineering team focused on delivering internal impact. Benefit from collaborative problem-solving, knowledge sharing, and a culture that values technical excellence and pragmatic solutions.

Application deadline: 12pm GMT Thursday 15th May 2025
