Research Scientist, Foundational Research in Language, USA

Seattle, Washington, US

Snapshot

We are looking for Research Scientists to join the Foundational Research in Language team, and produce cutting-edge research on the next generation of language-using AI systems.

About Us

Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.

The role

At Google DeepMind, we've built a unique culture and work environment where long-term ambitious research can flourish. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking foundational research in building and evaluating trustworthy, collaborative, and efficient LLM systems.

You will need to be able to understand, identify, and work on promising research directions, and implement them. Therefore, both a strong theoretical background and hands-on experience with training and applying large language models is required.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify and characterize the key technical challenges in building useful, trustworthy, and scalable language models and LLM systems.
  • Propose, implement, analyze, and test new solutions to these challenges.
  • Report and present research findings, targeting impact on both internal product teams and the external research community.
  • Contribute to team collaborations to meet ambitious research goals.

We’re looking for a versatile Research Scientist, comfortable with both figuring out how to approach new research questions and the technical implementation of research ideas. The role will be located in Seattle.

About you

In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we are looking for the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in natural language processing, machine learning, or closely related field.
  • A proven track record of high-impact publications.
  • Hands-on experience with Python, neural network training, and language data.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas effectively, e.g. through discussions, whiteboard sessions, written documentation.

Specific areas of interest for the team include (but are not limited to):

  • Interactive post-training methodologies for better dialogue skills
  • Statistically-motivated hybrid evaluation methodologies
  • Fundamental research on post-training such as reward model generalization

However, these are just examples, and we are interested in all candidates with a track record of innovative, theoretically-grounded research with a strong language component.

At Google DeepMind, we value diversity of experience, knowledge, backgrounds and perspectives and harness these qualities to create extraordinary impact. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law. If you have a disability or additional need that requires accommodation, please do not hesitate to let us know.
