Principal, Data Analyst/BI Engineer
WHY DEPT®?
We are a Growth Invention company built to help the world’s most ambitious brands grow faster. Operating at the intersection of technology and marketing, we create what is next by pioneering ideas, acting fast, and moving further because standing still just is not in our DNA.
We are drawn to people who stay curious, move with intent, and never stop inventing. Our culture runs on three values: better together, relentlessly curious, and get sh*t done. It is how we work, how we grow, and how we make things that matter.
At DEPT®, you will find the freedom to explore, the space to collaborate, and the trust to make a real impact for our clients, for each other, and for the world we are helping to build.
THE ROLE:
We are looking for a Principal, Data Technology to serve as a key technical anchor for the data and measurement ecosystem behind our client work. This is a builder's role, and you are equal parts data engineering expert and marketing technology specialist. You understand how modern platforms are architected, governed, and scaled; how semantic and analytical layers enable trusted decision-making; and how the underlying infrastructure, automation, and operational processes run reliably at scale.
You are equally fluent in marketing technology and measurement strategy. You understand how customer interactions become measurable signals, how consent and privacy requirements
shape data collection, and how those signals flow through an organization's technology ecosystem to support activation, optimization, and business intelligence. You'll support the full signal-to-insight lifecycle, from data capture and collection, through identity, consent, and measurement frameworks, into data pipelines, modeling, governance, and ultimately the reporting and analytical experiences that drive business decisions. This role is responsible for ensuring every layer of the ecosystem works together as a cohesive, scalable, and trustworthy platform.
At DEPT®, we take an engineering-first approach to solving business problems with data. As a principal technical leader within the practice, you'll guide the direction for data and measurement capabilities while remaining hands-on to define architecture, challenge assumptions, and drive delivery with credibility.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
Technical Leadership & Client Partnership
● Data Vision: Contribute to the multi-quarter data technology roadmap across both BI and MarTech, aligned to the client's business goals.
● Trusted Advisor: Act as a key technical voice in relationships, translating business questions into measurable data problems and technical realities into actionable language.
● Architecture Guidance: Guide architecture decisions, measurement methodology, and data-quality frameworks across the practice.
● Pragmatic Delivery: Balance near-term delivery with the long-term discipline of a maintainable, well-governed ecosystem.
Business Intelligence
● Warehouse Architecture: Support the BI stack end to end, covering ingestion, transformation, modeling, and activation, across Snowflake and BigQuery.
● Hands-On Engineering: Write the Python, design the models, stand up the AWS/GCP/ETL plumbing, and conduct thorough code reviews.
● Governed Self-Serve: Work with Looker / LookML as the governed semantic layer and primary visualization surface, driving toward trusted self-serve analytics.
● Healthy at Scale: Enforce the practices that keep a warehouse sound: modeling conventions, access governance, cost management, and pipeline observability.
Marketing Technology
● Subject-Matter Expert: Be a technical authority on the marketing data stack, able to diagnose a consent, tagging, or measurement issue and direct implementation specialists.
● Platform Command: Command the major media platforms and their supporting technology: Google Ads, Meta, SA360, DV360, CM360, alongside tag management (GTM, Tealium), CDPs, and server-side tracking.
● Signal & Measurement Strategy: Implement strategies for modern signal capture, spanning Consent Mode v2, server-side GTM, Conversions API (CAPI), Enhanced Conversions, Offline Conversion Import, and Customer Match, as well as mobile attribution (MMPs, SDKs, SKAdNetwork / Aggregated Event Measurement).
● Privacy by Design: Maintain the compliance posture for data tracking, covering CCPA/CPRA, GDPR, and consent frameworks, ensuring measurement holds up in a signal-loss, cookie-deprecation environment built on durable first-party data.
Practice & Team Leadership
● Raise the Bar: Set high technical standards and elevate the specialists around you through advanced code reviews and architectural workshops.
● Technical Face: Represent the practice's data capability to client stakeholders.
● Escalation Anchor: Serve as an internal and external escalation point for complex technical, prioritization, and delivery challenges.
WHAT YOU BRING:
● 5–7 years in data engineering, analytics, or marketing technology, including technical leadership of data-intensive projects and mentoring engineering teams.
● A track record as both strategist and practitioner who stays hands-on.
● Deep, hands-on experience across Snowflake and BigQuery—modeling, performance, governance, and cost, and strong SQL.
● Demonstrated Looker / LookML expertise as a primary visualization and semantic layer.
● Strong Python skills, with proven ETL/ELT design and hands-on experience across AWS and Google Cloud Platform.
● Subject-matter-level command of the marketing data stack, tag management, CDPs, server-side tracking, CAPI / Enhanced Conversions / Offline Conversion Import, Consent Mode, with the depth to direct specialists and speak with authority in front of clients.
● Working command of privacy and consent regulation (CCPA/CPRA, GDPR) and its practical impact on tracking and measurement.
● Strong communication skills across executive, client, and engineering audiences.
● Agency experience supporting a major global brand is a plus.
● Hands-on familiarity with tools like Matillion, dbt, Fivetran, or Airflow is a plus.
● Experience with server-side GTM, identity/clean-room work (e.g., LiveRamp), or mobile measurement (AppsFlyer / Adjust / Branch) is a plus.
