About the team
Dialpad’s Messaging team is responsible for delivering world-class messaging features that allow our users to communicate and collaborate seamlessly. The team owns key aspects of our messaging platform, including real-time messaging, notifications, and integrations with other communication tools. We focus on building a reliable, scalable, and engaging messaging experience for our customers, whether they're using SMS, team chat, or other messaging mediums.
The Messaging team is a diverse group, consisting of Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and QA specialists. We’re looking to grow our team and expand our impact, and as part of this effort, we're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a group of talented engineers focused on delivering high-quality messaging solutions.
Your role
As an Engineering Manager for the Messaging team, you will lead a team of engineers, overseeing the design, development, and delivery of messaging features. Your primary responsibility will be to guide your team through the development lifecycle while ensuring alignment with other engineering teams working on related projects. You'll work closely with product managers, designers, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of messaging features into the broader Dialpad ecosystem.
Collaboration will be key: you’ll partner with Engineering Managers from other teams (e.g., Contact Center Omnichannel, Telephony, and AI) to align on shared goals, maintain consistency in development practices, and deliver a unified messaging experience across Dialpad’s product suite. This team is positioned for significant growth, and you’ll have the opportunity to take on increasing leadership responsibilities as we scale.
Please note that hands-on technical involvement is expected, and as part of the interview process a live coding interview will be conducted.
This position reports to our Senior Manager of Engineering and has the opportunity to be based in our San Ramon Office. The position will require a hybrid working arrangement.
What you’ll do
- You’ll have direct reports ranging from Junior to Senior engineers, and will support their performance and career growth through regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, coaching, and mentoring.
- Consistently work with your direct reports to support their career growth.
- Assist in evaluating technical design & architecture documents and proposals on an ongoing basis, in anticipation of increased scale and ever-evolving technology to meet the demands of rapidly growing business needs.
- Work with geographically distributed peers including engineering managers, technical leaders, product managers, designers, support engineers and other stakeholders in order to align on engineering-wide priorities.
- Own large projects end-to-end including requirements gathering, planning, resource allocation, and sometimes execution.
- Drive effective engineering processes and policies.
- Scale the team by recruiting candidates from diverse backgrounds.
- Get hands on when necessary and assist with writing code, providing feedback on technical implementations & conducting architectural reviews.
What we’re looking for
- 4+ years experience leading a high-performing team of engineers, including managing and shipping cross-functional or multi-team projects.
- 10+ years professional experience as an engineer or engineering leader.
- Experience with the development of performant, scalable customer facing applications.
- Hiring & interviewing skills.
- Onboarding & mentorship experience.
- Willingness to get involved technically & deep diving as necessary to ensure technical constraints and dependencies are managed effectively.

$242,100 - $262,633 USD
