Associate Director of Product Development

About the Role:
The Associate Director of Product Development will be part of the team responsible for bringing new and innovative personal care products to life. Dr. Squatch is continually expanding into new product categories and this role will lead the development process for externally formulated and manufactured products. A passion for contributing to new product ideas and excitement about new product development is key. The ideal candidate will balance the creative side of innovation and technical problem solving with the people and project management requirements of the role.
This position will report to the Senior Director of Research & Development.
This is a full-time, hybrid role with company benefits based in Marina del Rey, CA. Regular travel to contract manufacturing facilities around the country will be required (~25%).
The anticipated base compensation range for this role will be $130,000 to $150,000. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate's experience and local market rates.
What You’ll Do:
- Drive innovative product and ingredient research to build a back catalog of unique product ideas in partnership with our third party manufacturers
- Explore future looking trends and product category opportunities for the business, working closely with Product Strategy and Marketing to identify key gaps in the market for men’s personal care and develop recommendations for 3+ year product launch roadmap
- Manage all aspects of new product development for externally formulated and manufactured products from concept to commercialization, including brainstorming new ideas, building briefs summarizing important product attributes, evaluating sample submissions, reviewing marketing materials such as packaging artwork and website copy, and ensuring seamless handoff to full scale production
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Supply Chain, Product Strategy, Marketing, Fragrance Development, Packaging Development, and Commercialization to bring new products to market
- Manage timelines of product development projects to support execution of new product launches in accordance with our product launch calendar, including the onboarding of new manufacturers as needed
- Build and refine processes to ensure that cross-functional teams are always on the same page as it relates to new product development and commercialization, acting as the primary point of contract for innovation and development with contract manufacturers
- Maintain documentation of externally produced formulas in accordance with our quality systems, such as clinical testing reports for claims substantiation and specifications for formulas, recipes, and release criteria
- Lead team of two direct reports and support their growth and development to build product development team capability and expertise
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field, chemistry, chemical engineering, or similar science preferred
- 7+ years of proven experience in cosmetic product development, preferably natural products
- Leadership experience with demonstrated ability to lead a team and manage others
- Project management, time management and organizational skills to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously and identify and escalate any potential issues or delays
- Proven record of executing new product launches on tight timelines from concept to launch
- Ability to think creatively and contribute to unique product concepts
- Deep knowledge of the personal care industry, with experience working with a variety of product categories and strong relationships with industry-leading contract manufacturers and raw material suppliers
- Understanding of consumer-facing product claims as they related to product and formula attributes
- Comfort with a rapidly evolving work environment, and experience taking initiative
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
