Role Summary:
This Neuromuscular Research Co-Op will be trained in a variety of lab techniques and will contribute to research projects tackling key disease biology questions. The individual will be an integral team member and contribute to the understanding of molecular and cellular phenotypes of in vitro and in vivo models of neuromuscular diseases, discovery and characterization of potential therapeutic compounds using these models. The individual will have the opportunity to learn and obtain hands-on experience on key aspects of discovery research in an intellectually stimulating environment.
This role is based in Waltham, MA without the possibility of being remote. This is a 6-month position beginning in July.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Performing molecular biology assays to assess gene and protein expression
- Performing routine cell culture and cell-based assays
- Diligently maintaining accurate and clear records of experimental work
- Supporting in vivo pharmacology procedures
- Analysis of data and communicating findings to team members
- Participating in experimental design, optimization of relevant assays, and literature review
Education and Skills Requirements:
- Undergraduate or Graduate student currently pursuing a degree in biology or neuroscience discipline
- Previous hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques is desired but not required; more specifically:
- Handling biological samples, especially cell or tissue samples
- Sterile techniques and routine mammalian cell culture
- Protein isolation and detection by multiple methods
- Nucleic acid extraction and gene expression analysis
- Hands-on experience working with animal models is highly desirable, but not required
- Self-motivated team player with a strong work ethic
- Exceptional attention to details and organizational skills
- Excellent communication skills and diligent with record keeping
- Knowledge of software applications such as Prism, Excel, and PowerPoint
