Internship Overview

This spring internship is for second year graduate or MBA students who are interested in gaining real world expertise in investment stewardship and sustainability research, with opportunities to engage with senior leadership at portfolio companies. The internship is 10-12 hours per week and will last the spring semester commencing January 2025 and concluding in May 2025.  Interns will join us in the office for at least one-half day per week and complete the remaining hours remotely. Interns can expect to complete the program having learned about the strategy and culture at a missions-driven asset manager, built deep industry and subject matter knowledge, and expanded their professional network.

The intern will sit with the Impact Strategy team and focus on company sustainability research and engagement. The intern will review and analyze corporate progress on, among other things, climate and social equity issues, to prepare for communications and meetings with portfolio companies. They will also provide assessments of proxy voting materials informing SFM’s vote decisions at annual general meetings. As scheduling permits, the intern will participate in meetings with senior leadership and sustainability experts at portfolio companies. The intern may also be asked to work on sector specific research projects.

What we look for:

  • Second year graduate students pursuing a degree at least in-part focusing on sustainability or have professional experience and/or completed significant coursework pertaining to issues around climate change and social equity
    • Coursework in finance or economics a plus
  • Strong writing skills and ability to craft messaging for senior leaders on climate transition planning and social equity themes
  • Subject matter expertise in one or more sustainability issue, e.g., climate change, energy transition, data privacy, human rights
  • Ability to compile and understand academic and industry research on a topic
  • Highly analytical with an ability to organize and analyze large data sets, and capable of interpreting, reporting and discussing results with audiences at various levels
  • Ability to think critically and draw connections between big picture sustainability goals and SFM’s policy goals
  • Passion to make a difference through impact investing
  • High degree of attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team-oriented environment
