Senior Battery Design Validation Test Engineer

Figure is an AI Robotics company developing a general purpose humanoid. Our humanoid robot, Figure 02, is designed for commercial tasks and the home. We are based in Sunnyvale, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. It’s time to build.

We are looking for a Battery Design Validation Test Engineer to lead the development of our battery pack testing. In this role, you will work with a highly cross functional group to test and validate an industry leading battery pack for a humanoid robot. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Own the design validation and verification plan for Figure battery systems through all stages of production
  • Design test methods for validating battery performance, life, safety, and reliability under various conditions (temperature, humidity, vibration, shock, etc.)
  • Execute mechanical, thermal and electrical battery cell and pack tests both in-house and with external laboratories
  • Support development and execution of battery pack manufacturing in-process and end-of-line testing
  • Collaborate with test equipment vendors to source, install and commission design validation and manufacturing test equipment at Figure
  • Generate all necessary documentation for test execution (test protocol, DUT specifications, equipment specification, instrumentation, etc.)
  • Instrument packs with various sensors including thermocouples, pressure sensors, strain gauges, accelerometers, etc.
  • Manage data acquisition equipment, data logging and post processing
  • Work closely with technicians to plan and execute tests
  • Write test scripts and programs for manual and automated testing with different cyclers and chambers
  • Analyze and present test results to cross functional stakeholders
  • Investigate root causes of test failures and collaborate with design and manufacturing teams to resolve issues
  • Create strict safety protocols and guidelines during testing and development
  • Maintain lab space and equipment, perform equipment calibration and troubleshooting as needed

Requirements: 

  • 5+ years of industry experience in developing and executing battery pack and cell validation test plans
  • Expertise in sourcing and commissioning battery pack and cell test equipment including cyclers, chambers, vibration tables, etc.
  • Proficiency in instrumenting battery packs with a variety of sensors and managing data acquisition systems
  • Expertise in writing/validating test scripts, analyzing data and presenting test results
  • Experience with programming, scripting and data acquisition languages such as MATLAB, Simulink, python, SQL database, and LabVIEW
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Materials Science or similar field

Bonus Qualifications: 

  • Understanding of battery management systems
  • Familiarity with CAN bus communication systems
  • Knowledge of battery safety and compliance standards (UL, IEC, SAE, etc.)
  • Expertise in measuring and characterizing cell properties and electro-chemical performance
  • Familiar with cell teardown, CT scan and other lithium-ion battery analysis methodologies and tools
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (i.e. CATIA V6) to enable design and build of design validation test fixtures

 

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $150,000 - $225,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.
