
Executive Director of Software Engineering
The Executive Director of Software will lead the transformation of the Exchange product—a critical component in the US healthcare supply chain. This leader will be responsible for maturing the software into a cloud-native, resilient, and efficient architecture while elevating engineering culture to elite standards.
The Executive Director will report to the VP of Software Engineering and oversee a team of over 50+ onshore and offshore engineers. Primary focus will be to align the team to best practices for software engineering, while driving measurable improvements in reliability, velocity, cost efficiency, and product delivery. The role requires a relentless focus on execution, a love of software, and experience guiding teams through complex modernization while delivering business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Organizational Transformation
- Lead alignment of roles, strengthening US and India teams
- Drive Agile transformation, improving product delivery with clear accountability
- Establish an execution-first culture that delivers measurable progress against transformation goals.
- Represent engineering with strong executive presence in forums with peers and leadership.
- Build a strong team including hiring, coaching, and performance management
Technology Modernization
- Modernize legacy systems into cloud native architectures using AWS, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
- Implement containerization, orchestration, and automation across the platform
- Improve release cadence to enable safe, on-demand deployments through robust CI/CD pipelines (Github Actions, trunk-based development, automated testing)
- Achieve high availability and performance to meet customer expectations.
Engineering Excellence & Quality
- Embed automated testing and quality engineering practices into every delviery cycle
- Implement robust and efficient regression and performance testing solutions to accelerate developer velocity
- Ensure secure and scalable architectures proactively remediating vulnerabilities and eliminating anti-patterns
- Apply scalability patterns, eliminate anti-patterns, and enforce engineering discipline across the platform.
- Use DORA metrics to drive elite engineering performance
Data-Driven Leadership & Outcomes
- Use data-driven metrics (velocity, lead time, deployment frequency, incidents, regressions, cost efficiency, and business value) to drive accountability
- Deliver roadmap outcomes that generate measurable revenue growth
- Partner across teams to manage costs, enforce proactive monitoring, and communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs and reduce infrastructure operating costs and enforce proactive monitoring strategies
- Communicate progress, risks, and tradeoffs with clarity through consistent, data-backed reporting
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with Product, Enterprise Architecture, Security, Site Reliability Engineering, DevSecOps, Infrastructure, Solution Delivery, Implementation, and Finance to deliver modernization and growth
- Align with global engineering leadership to ensure consistent standards and shared best practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer science, Engineering or related field
- 20+ years of Software Engineering experience in a SaaS environment including 7+ years' in engineering or cloud architecture leadership
- Proven success leading large global teams (50+) including offshore development
- Deep expertise in AWS, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Infrastructure-as-Code, containers, and automation.
- Demonstrated success migrating legacy systems to cloud-native architectures.
- Experience driving Agile transformation and improving deployment velocity and reliability.
- Strong technical and architectural judgment, with a track record of using metrics (DORA, incidents, regressions) to guide decisions.
- Executive presence and communication skills to lead transformation under pressure.
Preferred
- Experience in healthcare or other regulated industries
- Proven record of driving significant revenue growth through product modernization
- History of building elite engineering cultures with measure gains in reliability, velocity, and efficiency.
- Familiarity with frameworks such as Playwright, Vite, Vue/Nuxt, Angular, React
- Ability to align leadership, coaching, and tooling to enhance developer happiness and productivity
Estimated Salary: Base $161,200 - $230,300 plus bonus.
The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the GHX’s salary range for this position. The base salary is one component of GHX’s total compensation package for employees.
