About the Role:
We are looking for a Litigation Counsel to join our fun, mission-driven, growth-focused team to advise on the intersection of technology, the law, and supporting our business partners in serving our customers. The legal team’s mission is to mitigate risk while maximizing growth and our vision is to be trusted advisors to the business. We succeed when employees know when to seek legal advice and integrate legal advice, counsel, and review into the company’s initiatives so they succeed.
You’ll report to Lead IP Counsel, who is currently overseeing IP litigation, and collaborate to scope a role that meets business needs as Motive continues to grow and mature.
What You'll Do:
- Develop a deep understanding of Motive’s products and services and Motive’s product development process
- Manage outside litigation counsel for IP and other matters
- Evaluate IP licensing letters from non-practicing entities
- Negotiate IP licensing and settlement agreements
- Manage litigation budgets with outside counsel
- Support sales and customer support colleagues with customer disputes
- Respond to third party subpoenas related to customer accident litigation
- Collaborate with the Finance and Accounting teams to manage legal spend
- Advise business partners on litigation risks and issues
- Review and advise on litigation-related contractual provisions in commercial agreements, including dispute resolution, governing law, venue, arbitration, limitation of liability, and indemnification clauses
- Build strong relationships and work cross-functionally with internal stakeholders, including Product, Engineering, Sales, Security, Finance, and other relevant teams
- Stay up to date on industry developments to help your colleagues see around corners
- Most importantly, quickly earn the trust of your business partners to become a sought-after advisor
What We're Looking For:
- US-licensed and US-based attorney with a minimum of 4+ years experience
- Some in-house experience preferred
- Experience working on a variety of litigation matters with a focus on IP and business litigation
- Comfort with technology and working with engineers
- Willing to roll up your sleeves and do what needs doing with enthusiasm and a sense of humor
- Humble, low ego, deep commitment to empowering your colleagues

Your compensation may be based on several factors, including education, work experience, and certifications. For certain roles, total compensation may include restricted stock units. The compensation range for this position will depend on where you reside. For this role, the compensation range is:
United States
$111,000 - $169,000 USD
