Senior AI Engineer II

Remote - United States
What We’re Building
Honeycomb is a service for the near and present future, defining observability and raising expectations of what developer tools can do! We’re working with well known companies like HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard and more across a range of industries. This is an exciting time in our trajectory, we’ve closed Series D funding, scaled past the 200-person mark, and were named to Forbes’ America’s Best Startups of 2022 and 2023!

Who We Are
We come for the impact, and stay for the culture! We’re a talented, opinionated, passionate, fiercely inclusive, and responsible group of bees. We have conviction and we strive to live our values every day. We want our people to do what they truly love amongst a team of highly talented (but humble) peers.

How We Work
We are a remote-first company, which means we believe it is not where you sit, but how you deliver that matters most. We invest in our people and care about how you orient to our culture and processes. At the same time we imbue a lot of trust, autonomy, and accountability from Day 1. #LI-Remote

2025: The Year of AI at Honeycomb

We’re scaling our dedicated AI Team—a group of builders shaping the future of developer tools with AI at the core. This isn’t just about building cool demos—it’s about shipping reliable, innovative AI-powered features that make our users faster, smarter, and more effective. As a Senior AI Engineer II, you’ll lead high-impact projects, mentor teammates, and help define what great AI at Honeycomb looks like.

We’ve already shipped major AI capabilities like Natural Language Querying and shared our learnings along the way in posts like So we shipped an AI Product, did it work?. Now we’re investing even more deeply. Want to help write the next chapter?

What You’ll Do

Own

  • Lead projects implementing AI-powered product features from experimentation through production.

  • Improve the quality and reliability of our AI systems through prompt design, evaluation frameworks, and model tuning.

  • Influence architectural decisions across our ML/AI stack, tooling, and infrastructure.

Assist

  • Partner with Product, Design, and Engineering leaders to define and scope AI-driven product experiences.

  • Support non-AI engineering teams in integrating AI into their product areas—without creating knowledge silos.

Teach

  • Define and share best practices for integrating LLMs responsibly and effectively.

  • Shape evaluation and experimentation methodologies to support fast, iterative learning.

  • Mentor engineers on the use of AI/ML and prompt-based systems.

Learn

  • Gain deep knowledge of our core product workflows and the problems our users face.

  • Embrace our culture of experimentation, where short feedback loops and impact over perfection guide our work.

How You’ll Drive Impact

On the Team:

  • Level up the team’s skills through your expertise in LLMs, prompt engineering, and evaluation strategies.

  • Act as a multiplier by coaching others and shaping early best practices for safe and responsible AI development.

Across the Org:

  • Partner across teams to scale AI adoption thoughtfully and effectively.

  • Help build and maintain shared AI infrastructure that empowers the entire engineering org to experiment and deliver.

At the Company:

  • Deliver AI-powered features that differentiate Honeycomb in a competitive market.

  • Contribute to our public story and strategy in the AI space.

What You Bring

  • GenAI & LLMs: 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2 years of experience building and shipping production-ready ML/AI-powered features.

  • Machine Learning: Expertise in modern AI/ML tools and concepts, particularly large language models, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and evaluation techniques.

  • Backend Development: Proficiency in languages like Python, Go, or TypeScript.

  • Production Experience: Proven track record of owning and operating models and services in production environments.

  • Cross-Functional Skills: Effective collaboration with PMs, designers, and engineers in a product-focused environment.

  • Mentorship & Leadership: Experience mentoring engineers and influencing best practices within and beyond your immediate team.

Bonus Points

  • Background in developer tools or observability products.

  • Experience with production infrastructure or frontend integration of AI features.

  • Public contributions to the AI community (talks, blog posts, OSS).

This Role Is a Fit If You:

  • Are excited to own business-critical projects end to end.

  • Thrive in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.

  • Care about building real value for users—not just optimizing metrics.

  • Want to mentor others while continuing to grow yourself.

Base pay range for this role, depending on experience: $185,000 - $205,000 USD

What you'll get when you join the Hive:

  • Home office, co-working, and internet stipend
  • 100% employee/75% for dependents coverage for all benefits

If you believe you belong to any of the categories of protected veterans listed below, please indicate by making the appropriate selection. As a government contractor subject to the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
