Staff Technical Program Manager - Quantum Applications

We’re looking for a Staff Technical Program Manager - Quantum Applications who will be part of a cross-functional team at IonQ whose mission is to deliver the world’s best quantum solutions, on the world’s best quantum computers, to solve the world’s most complex and impactful problems. 

In this role, you will lead a talented team of application scientists to deliver the next generation of quantum computing solutions to real-world customers. You’ll work with principal investigators, product managers and customers to drive complex projects through initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling and completion. You will support delivery of a wide variety of initiatives ranging from bespoke quantum solutions, performance-optimized quantum libraries/platforms and first-of-a-kind quantum applications. You will help develop and promote culture, practices and tools that will enhance quality of our work and quality-of-life for our teammates.


Responsibilities: 

  • Own the end-to-end process of creating novel quantum applications for IonQ quantum computers, starting from ideas generation, customer engagement, proposal writing, execution, delivery, documentation and report-out
  • Create and manage project timelines, milestones and deliverables across multiple projects and multiple teams. Drive clear communication across multi-stakeholder teams to resolve competing priorities; identify and drive clear plans of action
  • Ability to roll up your sleeves, dive into details, and lead problem solving efforts, including as a subject matter expert and hands-on individual contributor
  • Report project status to a wide stakeholder base including internal/external customers and senior management, using both technical and non-technical language
  • Lead the transition of technology and capabilities from R&D to production, including the delivery of first-of-a-kind artifacts and technology demonstrations
  • Conduct risk analysis and develop mitigation plans to ensure on-time release and delivery of project deliverables
  • Contribute to IonQ technology and product roadmaps
  • Increase operational rigor and reduce waste by implementing the “right amount” of process without slowing down innovation
  • Work with project, contracting, legal, finance and sales teams to develop proposals, technical volumes and financial reports; ensure regulatory, fiscal and IP compliance
  • Drive quality control and devops processes such as standard work, CI/CD, version control, code style/reviews and automated testing
  • Lead recurring and ad-hoc meetings, including coordinating and streamlining team calendars. Drive and track action items, aggregate across projects to reveal blockers and trends
  • Accommodate occasional travel and evening/off-hours work to ensure customer success (need-basis)


You’d be a good fit with

  • M.S. or Ph.D in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science or other technical domain; or B.S. with equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of professional work experience as a Technical Program Manager in an innovation environment. Proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously across a diverse set of stakeholders e.g. internal functions, enterprise clients, academia, government, etc.
  • Prior experience working directly with customers to co-develop innovative solutions that deliver technical, commercial and societal value
  • Strong commitment to customer advocacy, success and customer engagement, including adapting to diverse communication, collaboration and management styles
  • Expert knowledge of managing complex projects using project management tools such as GitHub, Jira, SmartSheet, etc. Experience adopting rigorous processes to harden research-grade artifacts into commercialized products
  • Expert knowledge of the practices and tools-of-the-trade of writing technical documents i.e. design of experiments, statistics, Overleaf/Latex, ML libraries, scripting, etc.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. Ability to motivate, inspire and lead through influence
  • Strong work ethic and close attention to detail. Capacity to manage an exponentially growing team with constantly evolving roles and responsibilities

You’d be a great fit with: 

  • Working knowledge of quantum computing, quantum circuits, quantum implementation, quantum circuit diagrams e.g. Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, TorchQuantum, quantikz
  • Prior experience as a TPM in a fast-paced environment e.g. tech, startups
  • Prior experience developing Cloud, HPC and/or GPGPU applications
  • Prior experience transitioning first-of-a-kind software prototypes to commercial products
  • Prior experience working in business roles such as marketing, sales, business development or contract management
  • Prior experience originating proposals and leading federal/government contracts
  • Subject matter expertise in an applications area such as finance, pharma/healthcare, chemistry, computer vision and operations research


Location:
This position can work onsite or hybrid from one of our offices (College Park, MD, Bothell, WA) or fully remote in the US.
Travel: 10% domestic and international, with a focus on visiting customers and clients

The approximate base salary range for this position is $162,920 - $213,304. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.

Compensation will vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Beyond base salary, total compensation includes a variable bonus and equity component and a range of benefit options found on our career site at ionq.co/jobs.  Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided when a candidate receives an offer of employment. IonQ's HQ is located in College Park, Maryland, just outside of Washington DC. We are actively building out our recently opened manufacturing and production facility in Bothell, WA (near Seattle). Depending on the position, you may be required to be near one of our offices in College Park, Seattle, Toronto, Canada, and Basel, Switzerland.
