Staff UX Designer

New York, New York, United States

About the Position

We are looking for a Staff UX Designer capable of producing elegant design solutions for our internal systems, while also cultivating an environment for sustainable design growth at the firm. You will sit on one of a few teams in Tech, the part of Jane Street responsible for building the firm's technology.

Across Tech, we collaborate with teams and users in a wide variety of disciplines, so we're very invested in building an intentional design culture that helps people at Jane Street do their best work. The interest in partnering with people who bring user experience process and thinking to projects has grown in parallel with the scale of the firm. You will be joining at an inflection point: we are actively growing our design talent to meet the demand.

With direct access to a diverse user community, you will lead initiatives to help your team understand what people need to do their jobs, and apply user research to help scope what products need to be built to address those needs. You will help teams better understand how to approach user-centered research and how they can deploy these methods early and often during the product life cycle.

Demonstrating design craft is critical to the daily work of this role. As you scope work to be done in partnership with your team, you will rapidly sketch, storyboard, and prototype possible solutions for better experiences. We will expect you to distill complex routines of your user community into approachable design solutions that can be used by people at all levels of technical skill.

We are looking for someone who understands that deep knowledge of the existing processes and domain for a particular user community is crucial to their design work. Your scope of work will encompass initial conversations with people to learn more about their systems and challenges.

You should be willing to take the time needed to learn about our work and existing processes, while being flexible as we build a design presence. You will offer your insights on UX decisions across your team, advocate for usability testing across other teams in Tech, standardize user research methodologies, and further define how our engineers can best partner with a design collaborator.

About You

  • 5+ years of experience in UX design with a professional portfolio (please include a link to this in your resume or elsewhere in your application)
  • Your portfolio demonstrates a mastery of distilling challenges people face with their software into feasible solutions
  • Interested in helping our users and passionate about making their lives easier
  • Comfortable working on problems that rarely have clean, definitive answers; happy to make immediate, incremental improvements where there is obvious value
  • Capable of leading design projects across a product lifecycle from early conception to launch
  • Invested in unpacking technical details within a new domain prior to deep design work
  • Comfortable sharing ideas and designs early, and rapidly updating them within nebulous problem spaces
  • Enjoys collaborating with a wide range of colleagues with different skill sets and levels of experience; approachable, humble, and curious
  • Eager to create a strong design ethos within the firm and collaborate with colleagues to integrate a design process
