Job Overview
Jensen Hughes is seeking an Accessibility Consultant specializing in the built environment to join our team in the Boston area. This newly created position presents an excellent opportunity for professionals passionate about accessibility and universal design to contribute their expertise to a multidisciplinary engineering team and help expand our accessibility consulting services. We encourage experienced Accessibility Consultants, Engineers, and Architects to apply.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage client engagements across a variety of accessibility-focused projects.
- Collaborate with in-house accessibility consultants, multidisciplinary engineers, and specialty consultants to deliver comprehensive solutions.
- Conduct accessibility compliance inspections for residential, commercial, and government projects.
- Provide plan review services throughout the design process, from schematic design to construction documentation.
- Partner with building owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to support accessibility compliance and best practices.
- Contribute to business development efforts, including building client relationships and identifying new opportunities.
- Support and collaborate with the accessibility consulting team across multiple regions.
- Develop and deliver training sessions or educational presentations on accessibility topics for both internal teams and external clients.
- Work across diverse market sectors, including government, higher education, senior living, housing, public housing, technology, transient lodging, public rights-of-way, outdoor developed areas, and more.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3–10 years of experience in accessibility consulting.
- In-depth knowledge of accessibility-related design and construction regulations, including:
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Architectural Barriers Act (ABA)
- Fair Housing Act (FHA)
- International Building Code (IBC) and International Existing Building Code (IEBC)
- ICC A117.1
- State-specific building codes and accessibility standards (Direct experience with Massachusetts Architectural Access Board (MAAB) 521 CMR preferred).
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex accessibility requirements clearly.
- Ability to self-manage projects while effectively collaborating with diverse teams.
- Willingness to travel (~15%) for client meetings, site assessments, and project collaboration.
- Ability to perform on-site visual assessments, including tasks that may involve climbing steps, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods.
- Preferred certifications:
- APAC-BE (Accessibility Professional Accreditation Certification for the Built Environment)
- ICC-certified Accessibility Inspector and Plans Examiner
- Other state-recognized accessibility certifications

National Pay Range
$110,000 - $140,000 USD
