Staff Software Engineer, Platform (PST/CST only)

United States

We Breathe Life Into Data

At Komodo Health, our mission is to reduce the global burden of disease. And we believe that smarter use of data is essential to this mission. That’s why we built the Healthcare Map — the industry’s largest, most complete, precise view of the U.S. healthcare system — by combining de-identified, real-world patient data with innovative algorithms and decades of clinical experience. The Healthcare Map serves as our foundation for a powerful suite of software applications, helping us answer healthcare’s most complex questions for our partners. Across the healthcare ecosystem, we’re helping our clients unlock critical insights to track detailed patient behaviors and treatment patterns, identify gaps in care, address unmet patient needs, and reduce the global burden of disease.

As we pursue these goals, it remains essential to us that we stay grounded in our values: be awesome, seek growth, deliver “wow,” and enjoy the ride. At Komodo, you will be joining a team of ambitious, supportive Dragons with diverse backgrounds but a shared passion to deliver on our mission to reduce the burden of disease — and enjoy the journey along the way.

The Opportunity at Komodo Health

We must remain rooted in our values as we pursue these goals: be awesome, seek growth, deliver "wow," and enjoy the journey.

The Komodo platform powers all of Komodo’s current and future workflow analytical applications and enables 3rd party builders to integrate with, extend, customize, or build on the platform.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform team at Komodo Health, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the backbone of our technology. You will be responsible for designing, building, and scaling the foundational services and infrastructure that empower all our engineering teams to innovate rapidly and reliably. This is a high-impact role where you'll leverage your deep technical expertise and leadership skills to drive the evolution of our core platform, directly contributing to Komodo's mission. You will own critical components, influence architectural direction, and mentor fellow engineers, tackling complex challenges that are crucial to our success.

**This is an individual contributor role.

Within the first 12 months, as a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform team, you will have made a significant impact on Komodo Health's technical foundation and engineering capabilities. You will have:

Architected and Delivered Foundational Platform Enhancements:

  • Spearheaded the architectural design and led the implementation of at least one major new platform service or critical infrastructure upgrade (e.g., related to data processing, orchestration, API gateways, or core data service frameworks) that demonstrably improves scalability, reliability, or developer velocity for multiple engineering teams.
  • Driven the adoption of new technical strategies and frameworks for key platform domains, such as our data infrastructure (enabling robust integrations with services like Snowflake, Databricks, AWS S3) or our core deployment and orchestration pipelines (e.g., leveraging Temporal, Airflow), resulting in streamlined operations and enhanced capabilities.

Elevated Engineering Standards and Operational Excellence:

  • Established and championed new engineering best practices, API design standards (including versioning and OpenAPI adoption), or architectural patterns across the Platform domain and influenced their adoption more broadly within Engineering, measurably improving code quality, system observability, and documentation.
  • Led initiatives to significantly enhance our automated testing frameworks, CI/CD processes, and operational monitoring for critical platform services, directly contributing to higher standards of reliability and faster, safer deployments.

Provided Key Technical Leadership and Strategic Influence:

  • Successfully led highly complex, cross-functional platform initiatives from strategic conception and architectural definition through to successful launch and adoption, effectively collaborating with product management, application engineering teams, and other senior stakeholders.
  • Become a recognized owner and subject matter expert for key platform systems or components, providing authoritative technical guidance, authoring comprehensive design documentation, and articulating a clear future vision for their evolution.
  • Proactively identified and mitigated significant technical risks within the platform, and played a key role in resolving complex, ambiguous technical challenges that had a broad impact.

Fostered a "Bar Raiser" Culture of Growth and Engineering Excellence:

  • Consistently pushed for improvement in engineering standards by actively mentoring engineers at all levels, championing advanced software design principles (e.g., Inversion of Control, Repository Pattern), and setting a higher bar for software design, implementation quality, and code review practices across platform teams.
  • Played a pivotal role in attracting, assessing, and integrating top-tier engineering talent by serving as a key interviewer and "bar raiser" in the hiring process, ensuring new hires significantly contribute to the team's expertise and Komodo’s "Seek Growth" value.

Driven Innovation and Enabled New Capabilities:

  • Partnered with product managers and engineering leaders to translate evolving business needs into robust, scalable platform solutions, potentially enabling new product features or lines of business by enhancing core technical capabilities.
    • Researched, prototyped, and advocated for the adoption of innovative technologies or methodologies that provide a clear advantage to Komodo's platform and engineering velocity.

To successfully achieve the outcomes for this role and operate effectively as a Staff Software Engineer on the Platform team, candidates are required to possess the following technical and professional experiences and skills:

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience
  • Proven experience architecting and leading the implementation of complex, scalable, and highly available distributed platform services and infrastructure.
  • Extensive, hands-on expertise with cloud platforms (AWS strongly preferred, with deep knowledge of its core compute, storage, networking, and managed services like S3, EC2, ECS/EKS, IAM, Lambda, VPCs).
  • Proficiency in containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes), including experience with service mesh, custom controllers, or advanced deployment strategies (e.g., using ArgoCD, Helm).
  • Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles and tools, particularly Terraform.
  • Expert proficiency in core platform languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java, Scala) and relevant frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, Pydantic).
  • Advanced application of data structures, algorithms, OOP, and design patterns to build robust, scalable systems.
  • Deep experience designing and maintaining critical APIs (REST, gRPC) with versioning best practices (e.g., OpenAPI).
  • Strategic experience with diverse data storage solutions (e.g., SQL/NoSQL databases, data warehouses like Snowflake, data lake concepts/technologies like Iceberg).
  • Proven experience with event stream processing (e.g., Kafka) and designing event-driven architectures or distributed workflow systems (e.g., Temporal, Airflow).
  • A proactive approach to identifying and filling gaps in technical understanding and processes.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
