Manager, Torch Relays Project Management

The Torch Relays (RLY) functional area is responsible for the planning & execution of LA28’s Olympic & Paralympic Torch Relays. They are key national engagement & promotional tools, creating an accessible Games experience for people across the country and developing a sense of excitement and anticipation by all leading up to the Olympic & Paralympic Opening Ceremonies.     

As national engagement programs, the Olympic & Paralympic Torch Relays require not only the coordination of numerous internal functional areas, but also external stakeholders across the country to bring them to life. As a Manager of Project Management for the Torch Relays, you will play a pivotal role in the planning, coordination, and execution of these large-scale programs. This position demands a strategic mindset, strong organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate across multiple teams, ensuring that all project components align with the overarching vision of the events. You will oversee key milestones, manage project workflows, and contribute to the seamless execution of operations critical to the success of the relays. Given the fast-paced nature of the environment, adaptability and problem-solving skills will be essential as you navigate challenges and maintain progress toward strict deadlines.  

In this role, you will serve as a bridge between different functional areas, working directly with key internal and external stakeholders. You will be responsible for developing and refining project timelines and tracking risks while maintaining clear and effective communication across all levels of the organization. Your expertise in project management methodologies will be instrumental in optimizing processes, improving efficiencies, and ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.   

This role reports to the Head of Torch Relays.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Optimization: Implement best practices within the Torch Relays team and optimize workflows across functional areas for maximal efficiency and scalability
  • Project Leadership: Support overall project leadership as the linchpin across working groups & workstreams  
  • Cross-Department & Stakeholder Coordination: Serve as the primary liaison between internal teams & with external partners to integrate cross functional working groups, workstreams, and deliverables into program planning & manage interdependencies over time  
  • Workstream & Deliverable Tracking: Manage timelines, create reports and dashboards and facilitate follow-up on key workstreams & deliverables to support and enhance team planning and ensure successful execution   
  • Risk Management: Proactively identifying and mitigating risks  
  • Mentorship & Team Support: Guide junior team members, providing insights and training to enhance project outcomes  

Background & Requirements:

  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in project management, preferably in large-scale events, sports, or international organizations 
  • Expertise in project planning tools (e.g., Smartsheet, MS Project, Asana, Trello, Jira)  

Expectations:

  • Excellent stakeholder communication and conflict resolution skills  
  • Strong risk management and mitigation abilities  
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced environments with tight deadlines and evolving priorities
  • Track record of successful management of large scale, multi-faceted events & integrated marketing programs 
  • Experience with complex program management in matrixed environments 
  • Knowledge of Olympic and Paralympic event operations is a plus

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Project Management, Business Administration, Event Planning, Sports Management, or related field  
  • A Master’s degree or PMP certification a plus  

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work on-site in an open office environment, based in Los Angeles, CA
  • The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment 
  • Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods

The annual base salary range for this position is $88,000.00 - $115,000.00. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
