Senior Counsel
We are seeking a seasoned, versatile Senior Counsel to serve as a strategic legal partner across our hardware and software business lines. Reporting directly to the VP of Legal, People, and Policy, you will be responsible for accelerating the pace of execution across the company. You will manage complex commercial negotiations, build the infrastructure for a maturing legal function, and ensure the company makes informed decisions regarding business risk as we scale our residential energy solutions. The ideal candidate isn’t afraid to learn new legal areas and embraces the start-up culture to wear multiple hats when needed to get the job done.
Key Responsibilities
- Commercial Negotiations: Lead the drafting and negotiation of complex commercial agreements across both hardware (supply chain, manufacturing, sales) and software (SaaS, VPP operations) business units. Manage outside counsel as needed for specialized matters.
- Legal Infrastructure: Standardize global terms and conditions and create internal playbooks to streamline the contracting process.
- Contract Lifecycle Management: Oversee the archiving and tagging of contracts within the contract management system to ensure seamless reporting and efficient preparation of disclosure schedules for future debt or equity transactions.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Act as a high-autonomy legal lead for our commercial teams, providing actionable advice that balances legal protection with business velocity. Business partner with various other areas of the business - finance, HR, engineering to support the making of informed business decisions.
- Generalist Support: Provide flexible legal support on a variety of matters as they arise, including corporate governance, employment law, and intellectual property.
Required Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Experience: Significant experience at a top-tier "Big Law" firm.
- Licensure: Active bar admission (California preferred, but not required).
- Expertise: Proven track record in complex commercial contracting and risk management; comfort with complex, multi-party deals and creative deal structures; strong business judgment and ability to prioritize legal risk against commercial objectives.
- Maturity: Ability to work with a high degree of independence and interact confidently with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with hardware manufacturing or energy-tech companies.
- Direct experience drafting supply agreements and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) agreements.
- Familiarity with data privacy regulations, IP strategy, or HR/employment law.
- Familiarity with clean energy project development and finance

Our Compensation Philosophy: Our goal is to ensure that all Lunar Energy employees are fairly compensated. Please note that the salary range information that follows is a good faith estimate for this position provided pursuant to the Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act for California applicants. The salary range estimate for this position depending on level of experience is: $180,000 - $225,000 USD.
The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package & benefits, will be at the company’s sole discretion, and determined by factors including but not limited to years of experience, job level, geographic location, and other relevant business considerations.
