POSITION SUMMARY
 
Natera is seeking a skilled, experienced and self-motivated (Sr) Engineer Manager to lead a software development team in a fast-growing biotech company. The team will be primarily responsible for architecting, implementing and supporting the genomics secondary analysis pipeline software engineering for one product within the Natera portfolio. This role includes building and leading a distributed engineering team, working close to project management and product managers, and professional communication responsibilities on high-impact, high-visibility products. The Sr Manager will be primarily responsible for architecting, implementing and supporting the genomics secondary analysis pipeline software engineering for all products across the Natera portfolio. Further, the Sr Manager will be expected to drive process improvements and represent Natera pipeline software in regulatory and client audits.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead

    • Build and lead successful high-performing teams

    • Provide technical leadership for software development engineers, both onsite and remote, to ensure on-time, on-budget development of high-quality software

    • Own technical design, architecture and implementation of genomics secondary analysis pipelines supporting thousands of samples a month for one existing product in Natera portfolio. 

    • Collaborate with leads working in other products to identify similarities and drive standardization and efficiencies

    • Work close with 3rd party vendors to ensure the overall solution meets the aggressive business demands including performance, scalability, cost, security and regulatory compliance, etc

    • Drive implementation of the best engineering practices.

    • Contribute to release planning and management for one product’s pipeline software

  • Manage

    • Manage multiple ongoing projects.

    • Work closely with project managers and technical product managers to understand requirements, size development effort, assign resources, identify dependencies and agree on schedule.

    • Communicate issues and risks to project managers and participate in activities such as root cause analysis, lessons learned among others.

  • Nurture

    • Guide the career development of team members, nurture their technical and interpersonal skills.

    • Provide continuous individual performance feedback focused on recognition of achievement and opportunities for growth.

  • Collaborate

    • Build and maintain ongoing strong working relationships with stakeholders, focus on building effective communication channels.

    • Facilitate collaboration among cross-functional development teams, software quality engineers, and product managers.

  • Effect change

    • Provide feedback to management and initiate change to optimize software development processes with a focus on quality, innovation, and efficient product delivery.

  • Grow

    • Learn to write and review compliant documentation per CAP, CLIA, NYS DOH, FDA, HIPAA, NIST, and other standards

    • Learn to represent Natera pipelines software in audits with regulatory bodies, pharmaceutical companies, and other clients

    • Learn pipelines software / architecture in depth with an eye toward broader responsibilities

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or equivalent demonstrated industry experience

  • 2+ years of proven track record of building and managing high performing engineering teams 

  • Extensive experience building genomics secondary analysis pipeline for clinical and research use

  • 5+ years of experience in software development using Java or similar language

  • Proven track record of using genomics and relevant NGS analysis tools such as DNANexus, Seven Bridges, AWS, GCP, WDL, CWL, BWA/Novoalign, Variant Callers, etc

  • Experience developing software in a regulated environment

  • Experience in and aptitude for leading remote teams

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proven record of managing highly effective engineering teams

  • Experience in building robust enterprise applications using Java or similar languages 

  • Proven experience in high-throughput genome sequencing analysis

  • Expertise in building highly scalable and easy to maintain distributed systems

  • Hands-on coding, design, and architecture skills 

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • A passion for people management and mentorship 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate effectively with reports, peers, and stakeholders 

  • Demonstrate initiative with a proactive approach to addressing issues and finding creative solutions

  • Must demonstrate strong work ethic, work well under pressure and stressful circumstances

  • Experience in genomics tertiary analysis solutions is a plus

 

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Second graduate degree in business administration, engineering management, cybersecurity, RA / QA, or equivalent

  • Experience representing a company in audits with regulatory bodies, pharmaceutical companies, and / or other clients

  • 5+ years of proven track record of building and managing high performing engineering teams 

 

 

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
