Senior Product Owner (Fintech/Payments)

Remote, US

NMI is looking for a Senior Product Owner to drive tactical delivery across our Billing and Data platform teams. This role sits within the Engineering organization, reporting directly to the Director of Software Engineering, and carries ownership across two interconnected domains: Billing, which manages five distinct billing platforms, and Data, which owns ingestion and transformation pipelines built on GCP and BigQuery.

As a Senior PO at NMI, you are the subject matter expert for every feature your team builds. You do not hand off context to others — you carry it. You are present in the details: writing sharp user stories, validating acceptance criteria, conducting UAT, and ensuring releases meet the bar. You are the go-to person for your engineering team, your product manager, and your stakeholders when questions arise about how the platforms work, what is in flight, and what is coming next.

The seniority of this role comes through in the depth of your platform knowledge, your ability to navigate complexity across two technical domains simultaneously, and your capacity to influence decisions at the architecture and cross-team level — while never losing sight of day-to-day delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Product Ownership & Agile Execution

  • Lead delivery for the Billing and Data teams by managing team backlogs, facilitating Agile ceremonies, and ensuring work is clearly defined, prioritized, and ready for engineering execution.
  • Author detailed feature epics and user stories with precise acceptance criteria that give engineering teams the clarity needed to deliver without ambiguity.
  • Conduct and manage User Acceptance Testing (UAT) to validate that releases meet functional requirements, quality standards, and platform integrity expectations — including writing and executing SQL queries directly against BigQuery to verify data accuracy and pipeline correctness.
  • Coordinate release planning, write detailed release notes, and manage internal rollout communications for both platforms.
  • Collaborate with peer Product Owners to manage cross-team dependencies and sequencing across shared initiatives.
  • Partner with Product Managers to deeply understand product strategy and vision, ensuring tactical execution is consistently aligned with business direction and stakeholder priorities.
  • Partner with Engineering Managers to align on resource capacity and incorporate technical guidance into backlog planning, sequencing, and delivery decisions.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager to support cross-functional coordination, ensuring key features are delivered with the right stakeholder alignment and organizational visibility.
  • Define and validate Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) that incrementally deliver value while aligning with NMI's strategic goals.
  • Provide product training and enablement for customer-facing teams, support, and other internal stakeholders.
  • Maintain transparency by communicating upcoming work, progress, and timelines to stakeholders and executives.

    Billing Platform Expertise

    • Develop and sustain deep knowledge of NMI's five billing platforms: their architectures, business rules, interdependencies, and how they serve different merchant and partner segments.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for billing-related feature questions across engineering, finance, and operations stakeholders.
    • Partner with finance and cross-functional teams to ensure billing operations are compliant, auditable, and accurately integrated across key systems (e.g., payment processors, CRMs, ERP systems).
    • Translate complex billing requirements from cross-functional stakeholders into well-defined, executable user stories.
    • Identify and flag platform-level risks, technical debt, and consolidation opportunities in partnership with engineering leadership.

    Data Platform Expertise

    • Develop and sustain deep knowledge of the Data team's ingestion pipelines, transformation layers, and data artifact delivery on GCP and BigQuery.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for data platform questions, pipeline scope, and data artifact requirements across analytics and reporting stakeholders.
    • Author and execute SQL queries against BigQuery as a core part of UAT — validating pipeline outputs, confirming transformation accuracy, and ensuring data meets acceptance criteria before releases go live.
    • Partner with data engineering to define and prioritize data models, views, and dashboards that meet stakeholder reporting needs.
    • Advocate for data governance, lineage, and best practices in scalability, usability, and privacy-compliant data handling.

    Qualifications

    • 5+ years of experience as a Product Owner or Technical Product Manager, with a track record of deep feature ownership in platform, infrastructure, or data-centric environments.
    • Proven ability to become the go-to SME for the products and features you own — including technical depth, not just business context.
    • Strong understanding of cloud-based data platforms, pipelines, and tools (BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, etc.).
    • Ability to write and execute SQL queries against BigQuery as part of UAT validation — confirming pipeline outputs, transformation logic, and data accuracy meet acceptance criteria.
    • Skilled in Agile development frameworks and tools (e.g., Jira, Confluence, Figma).
    • Experience conducting and managing User Acceptance Testing (UAT) to ensure product quality and stakeholder satisfaction.
    • Effective communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Experience coordinating software release cycles, QA processes, and documentation.
    • Passion for understanding end users and translating insights into actionable product enhancements.

    Nice to Have

    • Experience with financial systems, billing platforms, or accounting modules in a SaaS or fintech environment.
    • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Google Cloud Platform preferred).
    • Experience in data governance or privacy-compliant data handling (GDPR, CCPA).
    • Technical background (CS degree or equivalent experience) is a plus.

As well as being a part of something exciting everyday, you will also receive the following benefits:
  • Competitive salary + bonus
  • A remote first culture!
  • Flex PTO
  • Health, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • 13 Paid Holidays
  • Company volunteer days

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability

Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 04/30/2026

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
