
Surgical Dental Hygienist with Local Anesthesia Permit

Position Purpose:
The Surgical Dental Hygienist is responsible for providing compassionate, safe, and high-quality clinical care in support of oral and maxillofacial surgeons. This hybrid role goes beyond the scope of a traditional dental hygienist, serving as a key partner in oral surgery and surgical procedures. As a Surgical Dental Hygienist, you will combine foundational hygiene expertise with advanced surgical assisting responsibilities, including administering local anesthesia were permitted by state law. This position is designed to elevate patient care, streamline surgical workflows, and maintain the highest standards of clinical, regulatory, and safety compliance.
Responsibilities:
Patient Care & Clinical Support
· Provide exemplary patient care, ensuring a high level of service, comfort, and safety.
· Communicate with patients and families in a professional, empathetic, and educational manner.
· Review and update medical histories, obtain necessary documentation, and confirm informed consent.
· Prepare patients for surgical procedures, ensuring understanding of pre- and post-operative instructions.
· Administer local anesthesia in compliance with state regulations and practice protocols, and perform radiographic imaging as needed.
· Monitor and record patient vital signs during procedures, reporting concerns promptly.
· Provide postoperative care instructions and ensure clarity regarding follow-up requirements.
Surgical & Clinical Operations
· Assist oral surgeons throughout surgical procedures, maintaining sterile techniques and anticipating surgeon needs.
· Set up, maintain, and break down surgical operatories following strict aseptic protocols.
· Sterilize, organize, and maintain surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
· Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient encounters and surgical procedures.
· Support sedation and anesthesia workflows in compliance with practice and regulatory guidelines.
· Demonstrate advanced knowledge of surgical instrumentation, oral surgery protocols, and infection-control standards.
Compliance, Safety & Quality Assurance
· Adhere to OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, and regulatory standards.
· Participate in monthly safety and compliance checks, including:
· Crash cart verifications
· Emergency preparedness attestations
· Controlled substance log accuracy
· X-ray and equipment calibration
· Oxygen tank and supply maintenance
· Ensure proper handling, storage, and documentation of controlled substances.
· Follow all sterilization, radiographic, and clinical safety protocols.
Teamwork & Professional Development
· Foster a collaborative and professional team environment.
· Participate in staff meetings, clinical training, CE programs, and required certifications.
· Support workflow efficiency through proactive organization and communication.
· Serve as a clinical resource for both surgical and hygiene-related procedures.
Qualifications:
Education & Certification
· High School Diploma or equivalent required.
· Associate or bachelor’s degree in dental Hygiene required.
· Current state Dental Hygienist license is in good standing.
· Certification to administer local anesthesia
· Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA) credential preferred or documented surgical assisting experience.
· Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; ACLS or DAANCE preferred or willingness to obtain.
Experience:
· Previous experience in dental hygiene required.
· 1–2 years of oral surgery or surgical assisting experience strongly preferred, training available for qualified candidates.
· Experience working in a fast-paced clinical environment with strong patient-care interaction.
