Electrical Engineer, Sustaining
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
We’re seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer (Sustaining) to lead root-cause analysis, corrective design, and process improvement activities for Oura devices currently in-market. This role is critical to ensuring long-term product reliability, quality, and performance by bridging field data insights with design and manufacturing execution.
As part of the sustaining engineering team, you’ll investigate product returns, isolate electrical failure mechanisms, and implement robust solutions across design and manufacturing. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams — including quality, reliability, firmware, operations, and suppliers — to drive continuous improvement in our electrical systems and production processes.
This is a hybrid role in our San Francisco office (2-3 days)
What you will do
Failure Analysis & Root Cause Investigation
- Perform electrical failure analysis (FA) on customer returns, RMAs, and field failures to identify design, component, or process issues.
- Use advanced analytical tools and techniques (e.g., X-ray, curve tracing, microscopy, thermal imaging, boundary scan) to characterize failure modes.
- Document and communicate findings through detailed technical reports and cross-functional reviews.
Design & Process Improvements
- Lead and execute design changes to improve reliability, manufacturability, and yield based on field and production learnings.
- Drive electrical component and PCB redesigns as needed to address known issues or supply chain changes.
- Collaborate with process and test engineers to enhance diagnostic coverage and in-line electrical test capability.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Quality, Reliability, and Operations teams to prioritize and resolve systemic issues.
- Work with Manufacturing Engineering to implement process controls and verification steps that prevent recurrence of failures.
- Support new product introductions (NPIs) by transferring field learnings and DfX recommendations into new designs.
Documentation & Change Control
- Own and maintain electrical sustaining documentation, including ECNs, test procedures, FA reports, and component qualification records.
- Ensure all design and process changes meet regulatory, reliability, and manufacturing requirements.
Requirements
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- Education: B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience: 5+ years of experience in electrical design, sustaining engineering, or product reliability — ideally with consumer electronics, wearables, or medical devices.
Technical Expertise:
- Deep understanding of analog and digital circuit design, power management, and mixed-signal systems.
- Strong diagnostic and analytical skills for circuit- and system-level failures.
- Proficiency in schematic and PCB tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, OrCAD).
- Familiarity with lab instruments (oscilloscopes, DMMs, logic analyzers, power analyzers, etc.).
Soft Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Strong ownership mindset and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Ability to balance thorough investigation with fast-paced production needs.
Extra Points:
- Experience with low-power embedded systems, sensors, and wireless technologies (e.g., BLE).
- Familiarity with high-volume manufacturing environments and process validation (FAI, PPAP, etc.).
- Understanding of reliability testing, HALT/HASS, and accelerated life testing.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and component suppliers.
