Senior Firmware Engineer - BLE
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Firmware Engineer with a passion for innovation in the wearable technology space. If you have a track record of developing cutting-edge firmware and deep experience building reliable Bluetooth LE connectivity on constrained embedded systems, we want you on our team.
What you will do:
- Design and Develop Firmware: Lead the design, development, and optimization of firmware for our next-generation wearable devices, with a strong focus on Bluetooth LE connectivity, performance, power efficiency, and scalability.
- Own Bluetooth LE Integration: Integrate, configure, and maintain Bluetooth LE stacks on embedded platforms, including working with vendor-supplied SDKs, silicon-specific BLE implementations, and RTOS environments. Ensure robust interoperability across mobile platforms and real-world usage conditions.
- Low-Level Debugging and Problem Solving: Diagnose and resolve complex, low-level firmware and connectivity issues, including BLE protocol behavior, RF-related problems, and cross-layer interactions between firmware, hardware, and mobile applications. Use protocol analyzers, logs, and on-device debugging tools to identify root causes.
- Collaborate Across Disciplines and Vendors: Work closely with hardware engineers, mobile teams, product managers, and external silicon and Bluetooth stack vendors to deliver high-quality, integrated solutions. Participate in technical discussions with vendors to evaluate SDK updates, resolve stack limitations, and influence roadmap decisions.
- Optimize for Power and Reliability: Design firmware architectures that balance Bluetooth performance, power consumption, and user experience, especially for always-on, battery-constrained wearable devices.
- Contribute to Strategy: Play a key role in strategic decisions related to firmware architecture and technology stack, aligning with our mission to revolutionize the wearable technology industry.
Requirements
We would love to consider you for this role if you have:
- 5+ Years of Hands-on Firmware Development experience: With a solid foundation in firmware engineering principles and Bluetooth LE protocol fundamentals, including:
- Proficiency in writing high-quality, maintainable, and efficient C/C++ code
- Integrating and configuring Bluetooth LE stacks on embedded devices
- Implementing standard and proprietary Bluetooth LE services and profiles
- Experience Working with BLE Stack and Silicon Vendors: Proven ability to work with vendor-provided Bluetooth stacks and SDKs, communicate technical issues clearly, evaluate trade-offs, and collaborate on fixes or workarounds.
- Low-Level Debugging Skills: Strong skills in debugging connectivity and protocol-level issues, using tools such as Bluetooth sniffers, logging, traces, and hardware debuggers to investigate issues in the field.
- Power Management Expertise: Demonstrated experience optimizing firmware for ultra-low-power operation in battery-powered devices, particularly in relation to Bluetooth activity.
- Agile Development Practices: Comfortable working in an agile development environment, with excellent collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with teams across different locations.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
